When was the last time you were afraid to ask questions?
Think about how many questions you
have asked (or been asked) each day during this first part of the semester. Communication without questions could lead to
trouble with miscommunication, unknown, or worse. Imagine if you knew that your life (and the
lives of others) would be impacted by what was being told to you, you did not
understand it, and you were afraid to ask any questions.
The Gospel reading from Mark chapter
9 for this Sunday is a passage that tells us about when Jesus' disciples were
reluctant to question Jesus when he was teaching them that "the Son of Man is to
be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death he
will rise" (Mk 9:31). The passage tells
us that the disciples "did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to
question him" (Mk 9:32). What do you
think made the disciples afraid to ask Jesus questions? Do you ever find yourself afraid to question
God? Do you find yourself often
unwilling to ask questions of your peers, professors, family, etc?
Despite our fear at times,
questions are a tool for wisdom and learning, and they are necessary in all
areas of our lives. When we are willing
to ask questions we are opening ourselves up to discovering new things about
the world around us as well as ourselves.
Just as questions are important in any classroom, they are also an
important ingredient for our spiritual journey.
Remember also that the Gospel also tells us that Jesus brought a child
to the disciples and he encouraged them to become like children. Think of the 2 year old children you have
encountered and remember that we are to be like that child who is inquisitive
and eager to learn and constantly asking "why?"

Sleep Out: This Saturday night!

This city wide event begins at 6:00 with setting up boxes or tents in the Science Lawn. The kick off event is the Habitat play at 8:00 in the Mitchell. This play was written by 20 year old Rachel Johnson based on her interviews with homeless people in Duluth. The play will be followed by educational programs and, of course, a sleep out.
Students who raise $50 will receive a T-shirt. The money will go to Project Homeless Connect which connects homeless people in Duluth with needed services.
Ending, not enduring homelessness.
