Lenten Reflection
The scripture readings for this fifth Sunday of Lent are
rich with symbolic meaning. We have the
Gospel of John capturing our immediate attention when some Greeks approach
Philip with the request, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus" (Jn. 12:21). We have the very amazing response of Jesus to
this request. "The hour has come for the
Suffering Servant to be glorified" (Jn. 12: 23).
Followed immediately with "Truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls
into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much
fruit..." (Jn 1:24). And finally, from the reading of Jeremiah, "I
will make a new covenant...I will put my law within them, and I will write it on
their hearts....I will be their God and they shall be my people," says our God (33).
As we reflect upon the request of the Greeks, "We want to
see Jesus" questions emerge. Why did they want to see Jesus? Had
they seen Jesus teaching the crowds and healing their diseases? Had they by chance seen or heard about the
recent raising of Lazarus from the dead?
We know that they had celebrated the Feast of Passover.... could it be that
their hearts were set ablaze with the desire for truth and were seeking out
Jesus who is "The Way, The Truth and The Life?"(
Jn 14:6) We don't know what their motives or reasons
were. What we do know is the very
puzzling response Jesus gives to Philip and Andrew when they presented the
request to Jesus.
