Lenten Reflections: 3rd Sunday of Lent

 "Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace."
                                                       John 2:13-25
 
     Snow still blankets the ground but there is a gentle pitter-patter of raindrops on the roof which is a reminder of spring cleaning.  The earth is beginning to be cleansed of the dirt and grime collected during the winter.  After the cleansing, new life will come bursting forth.  So, too, spring cleaning is a time to release what we are holding and hiding.  The space that such things take may rob us of new life.  Lent is a time for inner cleansing.
     In the Gospel of John for the Third Sunday of Lent, Jesus says, "Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace."  The temple was a holy place.  It was a place to be reverenced and not to be a Wall Street.  So, too, Jesus calls us to be aware of our own holy temple, our whole being (body, soul, mind).  Jesus is speaking to us and asking us to clean out the inner clutter of excess stuff we have stored away such as anger, resentment, hurt, bitterness, and unforgiveness.  All this stuff prevents new life.  More...
