Lenten Reflections: 1st Sunday of Lent
By: Gary J. Boelhower, Ph.D.

The readings for the first Sunday of Lent help us reflect on three central Lenten themes that are at the heart of the Christian faith tradition: desert, covenant and the kingdom of God. Just as Mark's Gospel tells us that Jesus was driven into the desert, so this Lenten season asks us to go into those places of thirst and dryness, those arid places in our lives and in our communities where the act of hope is difficult. The great spiritual writer, Henri Nouwen, called this process of going into the desert an act of voluntary displacement. The Lenten season asks us to go into places of discomfort, places we usually do not visit. These may be places of broken relationships, of fractured dreams or lost hopes, of poverty and injustice. Some of these places are within our own hearts where we have put off feeling the deep thirst we have for silence or prayer or a slower rhythm to life. Some of these places are within our families or relationships where we know the bridges between us need welding, new supports, perhaps, some in-depth conversation. Some of these places are in our communities where the hunger for justice and equality goes unanswered.
