A warm welcome

To all the schools embarking on a VisionWorks emotional literacy programme this term.

Whether at KS2, KS3 or in PRUs, this work, aimed at improving emotional wellbeing for students, seems to be making a difference in their empathy, relationships, communication skills and of course their learning.

Increasingly, academics, educators and neuroscientists agree that, for effective learning to take place, students need to be emotionally and socially literate. For those of you who would like to start addressing these issues in 2010, please contact Ruthie Alexander-Morgan or Sue Allen on 01249 409001,ruthie@vision-works.net, sue@vision-works.net

What really makes us happy?
smile

"What really makes us happy?" asks the first Saturday Times Magazine of 2010. The whole magazine is devoted to this question as we begin both a new year and a new decade. Sex? Love? Money? Prozac? Friends? Twitter? Alcohol? the front cover suggests. To a certain extent some of these make us happy for some of the time. But what, we wonder, will enable us to be lastingly happy?

One of the articles in the magazine looks at a Harvard study that tracked the lives of more than 200 healthy, well-adjusted students for 72 years. Having worked with this extensive data for 42 years, we are told that psychiatrist, George Vaillant's studies have made him realise "...the only thing that really matters in life are your relationships to other people."

The crucial part that relationships play in our lives has always been at the heart of VisionWorks for Schools; a good relationship with ourselves leads to self-confidence, and this combined with empathy, tolerance for, and understanding of other people, offers us a good chance of becoming a well-balanced and fulfilled adult.

"The foundation of every state is the education of its youth"

The VisionWorks team has been invited to work with Professor Richard Majors and the City College of Wolverhampton. Together, we are creating a comprehensive emotional literacy programme that can be delivered through the curriculum. This will be trialled by two academies in the city.

Using a whole school, cross-curricular approach to addressing and improving emotional and social well being, we expect the results to be even more profound than the current "bolt-on" approach often used in schools.

This is an exciting project and we will keep you informed of developments.
