Film: Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story
Peter Miller, director, 2010, US, English, 91 minutes.
Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, this thoroughly entertaining film celebrates the contributions of Jewish major leaguers and the special meaning that baseball has had in the lives of American Jews. More than a film about sports, it is a story of immigration, assimilation, bigotry and the shattering of stereotypes. Featuring rare archival footage of unforgettable games, as well as an articulate and passionate group of interviewees, including former ballplayers Al Rosen and Sandy Koufax as well as executives, writers and fans such as filmmaker Ron Howard and television personality Larry King. This moving story will be appreciated by audiences of all ages.
Guest Speaker: Joe Wallace
Joseph Wallace has published four books of baseball history, including *Grand Old Game *and *The Baseball Anthology*. Inspired by a true story, Wallace's first novel, *Diamond Ruby,* is the suspenseful tale of a 1920s girl who overcomes deadly threats to survive in a man's world-and pitch against Babe Ruth. IT'S NOT TOO LATE!!!
The Orot Committee invites you to join exciting NEW WEEKLY CLASSES:
The Absolute Beginner's Introduction To Talmud: What is it, why do we need it, what ethical and practical lessons does it teach?
Beginning Friday,
December 3 from 10:30am-12.00 in the library
taught by Wendy Segal:
This class is designed to introduce Talmud to the adult with no previous familiarity with Talmud. No Hebrew reading is required. The Babylonian Talmud was finished about 1,500 years ago. What is it? Why do people still study it? Why was it the subject of book-burnings? We'll look at how and why the Talmud was written, and then we'll look at a piece of the section on civil law. What are your responsibilities if you borrow something and lose it? What should you do if you find someone's cat? What does your shoemaker owe you if he dyes your party shoes the wrong color? Whose fault is it if your neighbor's dog falls into your pool and drowns? Come and learn, read, and argue like the sages of old as we explore the sea of Talmud.
Please sign up in the office by replying to this email or calling 245-2324 so that we know how many copies of materials to make.
