The Orot Committee announces exciting
NEW WEEKLY CLASSES:
The Absolute Beginner's Introduction To Talmud: What is it, why do we need it, what ethical and practical lessons does it teach?
Beginning Friday,
December 3 from 10:30am-12.00 in the library
taught by Wendy Segal:
This class is designed to introduce Talmud to the adult with no previous familiarity with Talmud. No Hebrew reading is required. The Babylonian Talmud was finished about 1,500 years ago. What is it? Why do people still study it? Why was it the subject of book-burnings? We'll look at how and why the Talmud was written, and then we'll look at a piece of the section on civil law. What are your responsibilities if you borrow something and lose it? What should you do if you find someone's cat? What does your shoemaker owe you if he dyes your party shoes the wrong color? Whose fault is it if your neighbor's dog falls into your pool and drowns? Come and learn, read, and argue like the sages of old as we explore the sea of Talmud.
Please sign up in the office by replying to this email or calling 245-2324 so that we know how many copies of materials to make.

FROM SOCIAL ACTION
Thanksgiving Baskets:
As noted in our prior email, YJC has committed to deliver 12 Thanksgiving baskets to the families of Yorktown Help (this is part of a community program along with other places of worship to provide Thanksgiving meals for 54 local families who otherwise would have nothing.)
As a reminder, these baskets would include food for a family of 5 (see contents below) plus a $25 A & P gift card for the turkey. To date, we have commitments for 7 baskets. We ask that you open you hearts and your wallets and volunteer to provide a basket. Doing this mitzvah will allow us all to have a happier Thanksgiving. The baskets should be delivered to the shul by 11/21 at 11 AM
Please email Deb May at djackson@weiserllp.com or Phyllis Cohen at cohen3ap@verizon.net if you can make up a basket (or will do it with one or more friends), also if you have any questions.
HolidayGift Drive:
As in prior years, we will be "adopting" a few area families this Chanukah.
These families include a dad who recently got custody of all of his children, a family with a boy who has brain cancer, and many mothers with little money for new clothes, food or gifts. Many of the families had jobs like us and recently lost them or had their health and now don't. They don't want welfare but a helping hand.
In the next week, we will put out the "Mitzvah Tree" (with wish list items for each child and parent.) Please take one or several cards. (If you can't come into the synagogue, just email Deb May and we can pick your items off the "tree.")
Your Social Action group cannot do this without you. Last year, you enabled us to help 5 families. Please, let us again reach out together to our neighbors this year. All items should be wrapped and labeled for the child with the family # which is on the card. They should be returned to the shul by 12/5 (Sunday) by 11:30 AM
Thank you.
Your friends in Social Action.
Contents: A $20 or $25 gift certificate to a local supermarket for the turkey [please remember to obtain it from Stacy Mitgang], fresh or canned yams or potatoes, stuffing mix, cranberries, cake mix or cookies, apple juice or other, rolls, canned green beans, canned mushroom soup, French onion rings (the last three items to make a green bean casserole). Reasonably priced wicker baskets are obtainable from AC Moore.
