From the President
Introducing 10,000 Friends' new President and CEO, Jack Machek
 
Jack Machek joined the 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania as President & CEO in late May, 2010.  Prior to joining 10,000 Friends, he served at the PA Department of Community and Economic Development.  Jack initially was a full-time Strategic Investment Officer for the new Governor's Community Action Team (CAT) before ascending to the position of Regional Director of DCED's Southwest Regional office.  Prior to joining the Governor's Center, Jack was an administrator for the Norwin School District in Westmoreland County. He previously served as both the City Manager and Community/Economic Development Director of the City of Clairton, an Act 47 third-class City in Allegheny County, and as a Program Coordinator/grant manager for the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, a non-profit corporation administering job training and educational programs for employers,  individuals, and dislocated workers,. 
 
Jack has a Master's degree in Public Administration with an advanced certificate in Applied Policy Analysis; has previously served on the Board of Directors of the Community Reinvestment Corporation, the Steel Valley Authority, and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission; and was credited with two years of active duty service in the U.S. military.

"Schenley Plaza was selected as one of six finalists out of 88 entries for the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Amanda Burden Open Space Award, a new national competition that recognizes outstanding public destinations that have enriched and revitalized their surrounding communities. Smart Transportation and the Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative (PCTI) Workshop - June 10, 2010river and bridge
 
10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, in partnership with PennDOT, Sustainable Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group, is holding a one-day workshop titled Smart Transportation and the Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative (PCTI).  The workshop will be on June 10th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the 31st Floor of the Regional Enterprise Tower 425 Sixth Avenue Downtown Pittsburgh. Building One PABuilding One Pennsylvania: A Statewide Summit on Regional Opportunity, July 16, 2010
 
The summit will give visibility during this critical election year to the common challenges faced by Pennsylvania communities, and to launch an organizing structure for advancing the state and federal policy agenda that will revitalize and strengthen Pennsylvania. The summit will feature national experts on regional equity, land use and municipal and school governance, as well as testimony from local community leaders.

Conference Looks Toward Regional Cooperation for Future
 
10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania helped organize the 3rd annual Regional Learning Network Conference held May 21st in Youngstown.  Nearly 260 grassroots activists, local elected officials, community development professionals, and urban planners gathered to discuss the best practices for rebuilding America's cities.  For an article about the event, please click here.
