"Sustainability" is one of the great buzzwords of our time.  Ever since the U.N.'s Brundtland Commission issued a call for "sustainable development" back in 1983, the term has been applied to an ever widening array of issues.  Today we have sustainable agriculture, sustainable forestry, sustainable energy, sustainable business, sustainable design, sustainable tourism, sustainable living... you name it.  At 10,000 Friends we and our colleagues are talking a lot about sustainable communities these days.  But what exactly do we mean by that?

Federal Rejection of I-80 Tolling Sends PA Back to the Drawing Board on Transportation

Smart growth strategies emphasize reuse of land in new EPA report
 
An updated U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report shows a continuing shift in development toward urban neighborhoods in the United States, despite a slow a real estate market. 

This trend, described in EPA's 2010 report, "Residential Construction Trends in America's Metropolitan Regions," shows that redevelopment continues in many urban neighborhoods. More...

Quantifying Open Space Loss From Urban Sprawl
 
"A new study in the journal PLoS ONE finds that 1.4 million hectares of open space was lost to urban sprawl in the United States from 1990 - 2000.  Robert McDonald from the Nature Conservancy and fellow researchers conducted an analysis of land cover data to measure the amount of agricultural and natural areas converted to development across the 274 metropolitan areas of the country." "In State of the States 2010, the Pew Center on the States looks beyond the acute problems caused by the Great Recession to examine larger trends that have the potential to change state government in lasting ways.
 
Both policy makers and voters will make key choices this year that will help determine the shape of state government in this new decade and beyond. The latest in a series of annual publications, State of the States 2010 can help inform those choices with its nonpartisan, analytical look at the recession's effects on policy and politics in the 50 states."
