From Our President
Welcome to spring in Pennsylvania! Despite continuing gloomy economic reports and sometimes depressing news stories, there's something about a sunny spring morning that renews your outlook and restores your belief that at least for the moment, things are looking up. And speaking of renewal, check out our new website at www.10000friends.org. We've freshened the design (new logo too!) and added new features like a direct link to your legislators and a contribute, or purchase on- line feature. Now, you can easily communicate with your legislators about the important issues that 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania advocates on and you can register for events on-line too. The web-site is a work in progress, please be patient as we fine tune it and add more information. And, as always, we are interested in your comments and helpful suggestions. ...More

An New Agenda for a Better Future - PA Works!
As one our Friends we know you share our belief that a prosperous future for our communities and the Commonwealth depends on common-sense governance and land use policies. 10,000 Friends has joined with some of our "sister" organizations that are working on these issues to develop the PA Works! campaign.
Pennsylvania Works! seeks to create good public policy that puts Pennsylvanians to work building a resilient, robust economy that creates lasting value. The campaign goals include a number of exciting initiatives. To highlight a few:
- Modernize the Laws that Govern our Communities - Enable our county and local governments to pool resources and provide municipal services as efficiently and effectively as possible. Create flexible approaches for joint taxes and fees, and provide state funding to support services like police, firefighters, public works, libraries, and others;
- Fix it First - Guarantee that four out of every five transportation dollars are used to repair, maintain and improve the efficiency of existing roads, bridges, and transit systems. Update the laws that prevent communities from transforming blighted neighborhoods and work toward preserving historic buildings in existing and older neighborhoods;
Restore Trust in Government Investments - Create a system guaranteeing that public money invested in economic development projects is effective and efficient, while being transparent and accountable to the public; Restore the dream of a home ownership and protect our neighborhoods - Create a state-wide Housing Trust Fund that will provide dedicated, ongoing opportunities to increase the supply and types of more affordable places to live, and keep financially distressed homeowners in their homes, by increasing funding for the Pennsylvania Homeowners Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (HEMAP). To review the full campaign, please visit the PA Works website.
The founding members include, 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, Preservation Pennsylvania, PennFuture, the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Keystone Research Center, PennEnvironment, Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association, and Regional Housing Legal Services.

One, the doctor, Herbert Needleman, is a Pennsylvanian, known to some of us in the environmental world, but an unsung hero to many. Denworth will read from the book and discuss how the fundamental questions raised by the battle over lead-what constitutes disease, how to measure scientific independence, and how to quantify acceptable risk-echo in every environmental issue of today. Multi-Municipal Planning Wiki Open For Your Input
Following the release of our report Plan Regionally, Implement Locally: an Evaluation of Multi-Municipal Planning and Implementation in Pennsylvania, we have been busy ensuring that this important research reaches planners and government officials. This effort led to the publication of several articles and editorials around the state. In addition, we worked with DCED and PSATS to offer a series of roundtable discussions where participants could share their experiences with the multi-municipal planning process. Now, we have teamed with the Local Government Academy to start the Multi-Municipal Planning Wiki which includes the comments shared at the roundtable discussions and the results of the report. For those who may not be familiar with the technology, a wiki is a web site designed to enable anyone with access to contribute or modify the site's content. If you have had experience with the multi-municipal planning process in Pennsylvania, we encourage you to visit the wiki, register for editing access, and share your experiences about the multi-municipal planning process. By using this innovative technology, we can help to disseminate best practices in planning across Pennsylvania!
