In the Southeastern region of Pennsylvania, 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania has begun developing an action agenda with regional and local leaders, builders and advocates for Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware and Chester counties. Our goal is to create a better roadmap for growth that strengthens our regional economy and makes Southeastern Pennsylvania a more prosperous and healthy place to live. Read Why Did We Create The Network?

Late in January, the Network participants endorsed an action agenda to implement three policy goals:

  • Link the development of housing and employment centers to existing transportation infrastructure to spark community revitalization, especially in older cities and boroughs and support efforts for workforce and affordable housing.
  • Secure dedicated funding for mass transit.
  • Identify and implement new revenue incentives for improved cooperation across municipal boundaries

Since its founding in 1970, the Pennsylvania Enivronmental Council (PEC) has played an active role in environmental policy discussions and decision- making in Harrisburg, in both the regulatory and legislative arenas. One of PEC's primary objectives is to bring different groups together for dialogue and cooperation to effect positive change. Recent projects have included working to educate specialized groups, young people and the general public on a variety of environmental issues and assisting communities across the Commonwealth plan for a healthier, more livable environment.

On April 26, PEC of Southeastern Pennsylvania and collaborating partners sponsored the first ever Philadelphia Sustainability Awards to recognize those who are leading the way to a more sustainable future. Businesses, non-profits, community organizations, individuals, schools and government agencies in the region submitted nominations early in 2007. Jurors reviewed more than 50 nominations total, demonstrating many aspects of sustainability. Click to view the WINNERS.
