The new year brings many exciting and challenging opportunities for 10,000 Friends. In this month's E-Update, you will read about one of the state's most pressing policy matters -- transportation -- and what 10,000 Friends is doing to help promote smart growth decisions and wise transportation investments.

Wishing you a happy and healthy 2007,
Janet Milkman

The Pennsylvania General Assembly reconvened for the start of its 2007-2008 session on January 2. With 50 new representatives and 5 new senators, this legislative session has the largest number of freshman legislators in recent years. Rep. Dennis O'Brien (R-Philadelphia) was elected Speaker of the House, and committee assignments have not been announced yet. Check the next edition of our E-Update for more information on this legislative session.

The recent release of the Transportation Funding and Reform Commission's report makes it clear that Pennsylvania's aging transportation system is in need of new funding. "10,000 Friends agrees with the Commission's recommendation that real reforms must accompany new revenue," writes Janet Milkman in the Harrisburg Patriot. "If we don't change the way we invest and grow, we'll be in the same position 10 years from now." Read the rest of her recently published essay here.

Report Calls for Multi-Pronged Approach
"Nearly 70 percent of Pennsylvanians believe that efforts should be focused on fixing and maintaining the state's roads, bridges, and transit systems, rather than building new." In each edition of our 2007 E-Update, 10,000 Friends will recommend a simple task that we can all do to become more mindful of the choices and decisions we make as citizens of Pennsylvania.

Take a look at 10,000 Friends' strategic plan and the goals we've outlined to achieve our mission over the next five years. These priorities allow 10,000 Friends to help residents shape their communities in ways they choose and ultimately work toward a healthy, prosperous and beautiful Pennsylvania. This year, make it your new year's resolution to think about our goals and how they might affect your community. Commit to writing to your legislator at least once this year in support of those that are important to you.
