Mindful Eating
A universal activity during holiday celebrations is gathering together with loved ones and sharing food.  For many, it's also an opportunity to over indulge and eat far too much.

Our mind is an incredible tool in it's ability to focus and concentrate. Sometimes it does that so well that too much information runs through our brain and we become overstimulated and stressed. From to-do lists of activities, to gatherings with people we don't often see there's a lot more info passing through.

And that's what's happening when we overindulge.  Our minds, already in hyper focus mode, has still more information to process:  food choices.  There so much to choose from that we choose it all, get caught up in the emotion of the experience, and/or the haste of eating and consume without thoughtfulness.  E voila! We've eaten too much.

Here's a tip to help with this season's victual enjoyment and your body, mind and spirit's health.  Enjoy this for yourself or share it with your gathering as the starter course of meal.

Use your mind to pay attention to the one task of eating.
Use all of your senses to eat:  sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.
Nourish yourself both with food and your preciously present presence

Begin by looking and listening to the food.
Look at the choices available to you.  Take in the banquet.  Listen to how the food sounds and listen to what your body finds genuinely nourishing.  Look at how it's arranged, how beautiful it looks.  Let your eyes feast for a moment. Be aware of your fork, spoon or fingers picking up the food or holding the bowl or plate.  Place it deliberately upon your palte or napkin and simply notice actions and what's going on internally.  If you're picking it up with your fingers, notice how it feels between your fingers.  Are you holding a warm bowl?  Feel the heat spreading through your fingers into your hands and beyond.

Feel your heart swell into a private song of thanks.  Explore an attitude of gratitude.  Offer a silent prayer of thankfulness for the food and all the effort involved to arrive on your plate so that you can enjoy this moment of mindful eating and mindful nourishment.

Bring the food item to your nose and inhale slowly and deeply.  Inhale the aroma slowly, deeply.  Let it move through your entire body.  Be in this moment and experience it fully.  You can receive so much from the smell.  Those nerves firing off messages of "Here comes the food!" causing excitement within your body-mind and stimulating the digestive system.

Place the food in your mouth and pause.  Notice how your mouth wraps around the food.  Notice your lips closing and pause with the food in your mouth before you begin chewing. In this pause, just let the taste wash through your mouth. Enjoy the sensation.

Slowly begin chewing your food.  Begin chewing your food slowly and feel your focus growing sharper as you experience what's going on in your mouth.  Enjoy this process of breaking down and mixing in your mouth until the food is liquefied.  Notice how your mouth is being flooded with saliva as the digestive process begins. Sense the different tastes that move through your body as you enjoy how full of sensation the sensuous eating experience can be.

Swallow and pause.  Swallow your food and feel it moving into your stomach and settle in for its next journey in providing nourishment.  Rest in the moment of successfully eating this morsel of deliciousness in a way that nourishes your body, your mind and your being.

And when you are ready, begin again being in the experience of eating, noticing the sensations, and experiencing the moment fully and mindfully.
