Dear Patient,

A common cold is a disease of  the upper respiratory system which generally lasts five to 10 days. It is called a cold because the illness occurs when somebody has been really cold. Influenza-like infection is a generic expression for systemic diseases with various causes.
The degree of susceptibility for colds and infections is essentially determined by the immune system. Its functioning is dependent on physical health and spiritual well-being.
As Autumn is here and winter approaches we are more likely to catch a cold so I have asked some of our specialists to give us some tips to boost our immune system and prevent illness.

"There are many ways you can help yourself through this winter season to stop yourself getting the dreaded lurgie. Diet-wise ensure there are lots of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables in all your meals, that means berries in your porridge and extra broccoli with dinner. Herbal teas can also be a useful way to boost immunity, good brands to choose from include Pukka and Dr Stuarts, stir in some manuka honey to give an extra kick! There are a range of supplements that can also support and boost the body's immune system: Vitamin C (1000mg p/day) and zinc (15mg p/day) are a good starting point, Andrographis (Pukka) is a great stimulator for the body's immunity and giving Echinacea a run for its money. Vitamin D is also an essential for winter, known as the sunshine vitamin (the body manufactures vitamin D after being exposed to sunlight), we become deficient in the winter months, since this vitamin is important for regulating the immune system it is important to supplement.
Combine all these elements together and this should set you in good stead for a healthy and happy winter!"
