Another hectic few months!
I've been privileged to be in Cape Town,
Tallinn, Dubai, Frankfurt and Port-of-Spain
if as well as some fascinating places in the
UK and Northern Ireland.
I've listened to some of the most amazing
people - some my fellow professional speakers
- others like Roelf Meyer, the "father" of
the new democratic constitution of South
Africa who mesmerised us with his gentle
insights and infinite patience.
I've met amazing people - how many of us
discovered in our 20s that her mother spent
five years banished to Siberia when she was a
teenager, many thousands of miles from your
home in Estonia?
I ran a workshop for TEC
South Africa at the
premises of a successful and growing film
studio - only to be told that Clint Eastwood
was filming in the room next door!
I worked with South Africa's Women
Entrepreneur of the year and her team at the
top chef's
school in Africa,
Capsicum.
I have a fascinating new client in Dubai,
Ducab,
the largest cable manufacturer in the
region who is committed to growing, no matter
what. An attitude we can all learn
from.
Talking of growth are pleased to share with
you that at one of the companies where I'm an
Independent Director we have had the major
UK banks fighting to give us finance for
our ambitious growth plans - which is not
what the media tell us should be the case!
We are now moving ahead with a planned move
to new premises and major investment in new
manufacturing plant - exciting times!
Unlike some of my colleagues who are regular
stars on the media (like Graham
Davies and
Alan
Stevens) I've rarely been on TV but in
the last few weeks I found myself on a CNN
talking
about when CEOs should resign,
Estonia
TV and three channels in Trinidad!
Talking of Trinidad what a great place it is
with the most welcoming and accommodating of
people. I spoke at their Excellence in
Business Forum together with five very
impressive "local success stories" - but the
highlight had to be for my wife and I in the
early
hours of the morning watching leatherback
turtles lay their eggs on the beach - awesome!
On the Professional
Speakers Association
front the Convention planning team are
putting together the most fabulous event -
from 13-15 November in Marlow. If you even
the fleetingly-ist interest in speaking or
hearing some the foremost international
speakers
book now - you won't regret it!
Finally let me remind you of the "Helicopter"
awards for outstanding service and for lousy
service.
Just one "Golden Helicopter" Award this time -
I welcome nominations in either category.
Explanations of why they're being recommended
should be put on my blog to back up the
listing.

valuable and may I thank you for your support
and smiles.

Your Status Quo Is No Longer an Option...
More businesses will disappear in the next year due to a belief in the status quo than for any other reason.
The successful businesses of the future will
be those that are hardwired to, and fully
embrace creativity - no matter what business
they are in.
It's no coincidence that Dell recently
announced results down 60% whilst Apple's
were 31% up nor that Virgin Atlantic has
doubled profits whilst British Airways has
hit record losses.
No matter what our business we have all got
to get out of any belief that the status quo
is an option. We need to be creative (and
not a little risk-taking) in firstly
identifying new markets, deciding how we are
going to approach those markets and in
developing new, innovative, products or
services.
This creativity does not have to be earth
shattering. There is a Volkswagen car dealer
in the north-east of England who have
increased their service income this year by
offering a choice when you book your car in
for service:
"Would you like a loan car or an office?"
What they have done is to set up mini-offices
with all facilities - WiFi, computer,
scanner, printer, copier etc for use by
clients whilst their car is being serviced.
It's done wonders for their business.
Maybe one day a legal practice will fully
embrace e-mail and indeed communicate with
Clients using this medium and maybe website
downloads of important documents. That would
be highly creative for that profession -- and
the first to do it will have an edge on the
competition.
For others it may be that you will need to
recognize and embrace the fact that the top
economies within a few years will be the
so-called "BRIC" (Brazil, Russia, India,
China) countries and go out and sell to them
now.
No matter your business
No matter how successful you are, or have
been,
- you need to change.

Not a lot of people know that........

3.6million sausages and 3.4 million litres of

Womens' cricket is growing in popularity in

The "Helicopter" Service Awards
I find myself increasingly putting the
service I receive
from organisations into one of two categories
either "outstanding" or " lousy" - there doesn't
seem to be just 'average' any more.
I've introduced therefore
"Golden Helicopter"
outstanding service awards and "Ditched
Helicopter" lousy service awards
You'll find the story behind each in my Blog
Please add your comments and any
recommendations of your own for awards.

What People Say
"Roger, we have seen a sustained
increase in
revenues and profits as a direct result of
attending
your workshop. Thankyou ! "
Martin Mulligan, CEO,
Martin
Mulligan Group Limited
"Without question Roger's workshops have
been the catalyst in enabling our six operating
companies to unlock the door to profitable
growth and
without exception, everyone has a real desire
to be in
the renewal room and when there, reside in it
permanently!"
Trevor Hebdon,
CEO, H&H
Group plc
"Roger Harrop's Helicopter analogy is a
great one. Having the skills to rise above
the clouds to set the vision and see the big
picture, but also the ability to fly down low
and drive the details are both essential
skills for a successful President or General
Manager. Roger's pragmatic approach and
outstanding delivery make his message
meaningful for all audiences."
Dan Daniel,
Group Executive, Danaher
Corporation
"The sessions were really good - Roger is
particularly skilled at asking the right
questions to make you find the answers to
move forward yourselves as opposed to telling
you what to do. He is a perceptive man who
is clearly skilled in motivating and getting
the best out of people. It is refreshing to
see the train of thought his influence has
provoked company wide."
Caroline Singleton, Sales Representative,
Thomas
Graham & Sons Limited
"It is no coincidence that the Group's
dramatic
improvement in performance, over the last 18
months, relates directly to Roger's
association with
us"
Ian McKernan, Chairman & CEO Molecular
Products Group plc
"Congratulations! - your workshop scored 8.9
in the survey results which is very good"
