What interesting times we are in - and what an interesting time I've had in the last few weeks!

    - I've had an armed guard escort me from the airport to my hotel.

    - I've spoken at the lovely Arts Hotel in Barcelona.

    - I've had an operation on my back.

    - My wife Chris is giving up teaching and has been accepted on a two year photography course

    - I've run a first workshop for the fascinating Young Presidents Organisation

    - I've started working with three fascinating new Business Advice Clients, Systems Group, Eternity Clothing and Thomas Graham.

    - My son, Russ, is getting married in France next Spring to his gorgeous Finnish fiance, Paivi

    - Last but not least, I'm very excited to have been booked to speak in Iran in July. (and I seem to have become a doctor!)

So what about business generally and all this crisis talk?
Well I remain optimistic. I come across many companies in every possible business sector, from start ups to multi national corporations - worldwide and I have to tell you that in the last six months there's only been one that has been adversely affected by the "credit crunch".
They were a hotel group where the bank withdrew funding for an acquisition at the last moment.
Just about everyone else seems to be doing well from what I see but, nevertheless, we must accept that if the banks do tighten up and stop lending then that can only adversely affect business,
but will they really do that?
I can't believe they will - sure they've messed up big time as an industry - but, fundamentally, they are there to lend money - nothing else.

My worry is that , if we are not careful, as business leaders we will stop investing, stop taking the essential risks of business because of our concerns about a possible recession due to the credit crunch.
That could be self fulfilling - I do strongly believe that if demand is there then we should still be investing for the future.

Next I must take the opportunity to congratulate BIRAL - where I'm a Non-Exec Director - for winning an over £4million contract for bio detection equipment - a fantastic achievement!

I mentioned last time that I had been the guest on "Face to Face" on City 7 TV, Dubai. Well it's finally been aired and you can see it here any minute now.

Finally let me remind you of the "Helicopter" awards for outstanding service and for lousy service.

Just one "Golden Helicopter" Award, this month!
I welcome nominations for either category.
Explanations of why they're being recommended should be put on my blog to back up the listing.

I hope you enjoy this newsletter and find it valuable and may I thank you for your support and smiles.

PS. There's inflation happening out there again and remember you simply MUST pass price increases on to your customers to protect your margin!

So just how good are you at saying "thank you"?

Okay - on a scale of one to 10 how would you rate yourself in the "thanking" stakes?

    8 or 9?

Well if so I think you must be unusual. I seem to be finding it increasingly unusual for people to acknowledge help when you've given it - whether it's as a company or an individual.
I can't think why - it surely is easier than it's ever been to type "thanks for that" and press the send button or just give someone a call. Maybe we are simply too busy these days - too busy running our businesses, maybe too busy trying to get new customers and to keep the existing customers happy.

If that is the case then I do believe you need to do something about it.

Firstly if we are just talking about responding to some help or advice we have been given then, not only is it just common courtesy to say thank you, but also it must be in our longer term interests mustn't it? - because if you don't surely that person is going to think twice before helping us again.

    New "Helicopter" Programmes

As you will know I regularly run my "signature" programme:

"Staying in the Helicopter ® - the key to profitable growth" as a keynote, seminar or from half a day to a two day workshop.

Over the years I've often been asked to run supplementary programmes going into more depth into the areas of business I cover.

So - Here they are at last ! - five new supplementary programmes:

"Staying in the Helicopter ® - and avoid change failing"

Helicopter Awards The "Helicopter" Service Awards

I find myself increasingly putting the service I receive from organisations into one of two categories either "outstanding" or " lousy" - there doesn't seem to be just 'average' any more. I've introduced therefore "Golden Helicopter" outstanding service awards and "Ditched Helicopter" lousy service awards

You'll find the story behind each in my Blog

Please add your comments and any recommendations of your own for awards.

"Roger, we have seen a sustained increase in revenues and profits as a direct result of attending your workshop. Thankyou ! " Martin Mulligan, CEO, Martin Mulligan Group Limited

"Without question Roger's workshops have been the catalyst in enabling our six operating companies to unlock the door to profitable growth and without exception, everyone has a real desire to be in the renewal room and when there, reside in it permanently!" Trevor Hebdon, CEO, H&H Group plc

"Roger Harrop's Helicopter analogy is a great one. Having the skills to rise above the clouds to set the vision and see the big picture, but also the ability to fly down low and drive the details are both essential skills for a successful President or General Manager. Roger's pragmatic approach and outstanding delivery make his message meaningful for all audiences." Dan Daniel, Group Executive, Danaher Corporation

"It is no coincidence that the Group's dramatic improvement in performance, over the last 18 months, relates directly to Roger's association with us" Ian McKernan, Chairman & CEO Molecular Products Group plc

"Congratulations! - your workshop scored 8.9 in the survey results which is very good" Maneesh Garg, Education Chair, Young Presidents Organization, Lagos
