Since I had so many people comment on the picture
in the last newsletter of the tallship, Soren
Larsen with which we had just had the adventure
of a
lifetime in the Southern Pacific - here's another!
Incidentally my Newsletter provider, Constant Contact,
have a new facility to allow old newsletters to be
achived and available to view through my website.
You'll find an article on creativity in this issue and, yes,
it does apply to you !
As I travel the world meeting CEOs and seeing all
kinds and types of
businesses I am convinced more than ever that it is
creativity that will give you the the biggest opportunity
to get an
edge on your competition.
I don't mean just new products or services but
also innovation in your systems and, indeed, every
aspect of your
business.
Next let me remind you of the "Helicopter" awards
for outstanding
service and for lousy service.
Just three
new "Ditched Helicopters" this month - and
no "Golden Helicopters" atall !
I welcome nominations for either category.
Explanations of why they're being
recommended should be put on my blog
to back up the
listing.
Finally I hope you had, or wish you do have a very
Happy Diwali, Jewish
New
Year, Christmas, Eid, Chinese New Year or any other
celebration important to you.
I hope you enjoy this newsletter and find it valuable
and may I thank you for your support and smiles over
the last year.

PS. Oh dear - same tie in all the photos - must be a new one!

Where's your creativity?
- it what differentiates the great from good
The other day I came across two pieces of information
that set me thinking.
It is generally recognised that one of the key factors
that differentiates the consistently successful
companies from the less successful is their creativity -
their good ideas - that they turn into successful new
products and process innovations.
During the workshops that I run we look at the results
of the research carried out by Treacy & Wiersema into
the Discipline of Market Leaders* and their
conclusions that to become a market leader (and, in
terms of results, these are the companies that are the
most successful) you need to be a market leader in
one of three disciplines and at least industry average
in the other two.
The disciplines are:
- Operational Excellence
- Product & Process Innovation
- Customer Intimacy
I've now run 100's of workshops for groups of SME
CEOs, Corporate Boards, Senior Managers, Trustees
of not-for-profit organisations and others - all over the
world.
I always ask delegates to share with us what they
believe is the current "shape" of their business, in
terms of the three disciplines, and what shape they
would want to target for the future.
Consistently I find that of the three disciplines the one
that is most often found wanting is Product and
Process Innovation.
Indeed it is not unusual for CEOs to say to me:
"There really is no innovation in our type of
business"
I have two comments to that, firstly that if that's the
case then surely it's a massive opportunity to
differentiate yourselves from the rest and secondly I
simply don't believe it!

Which are the best countries in which to do business?
- 2007 World Bank ratings
Once again Singapore is number one in this year's
World Bank study of the best countries in which to do
business.
They are hotly followed by New Zealand, USA, Hong
Kong and Denmark with the UK, Canada, Ireland,
Australia
and Iceland completing the top 10.
What's also interesting in this year's survey are some
of the improvers:
For example Estonia, Georgia, Latvia and Lithuania
are, surprisingly, all above both Korea and Taiwan.
The so-called BRIC nations who are forecast to be the
leading economies of the future are still well down the
list with China at 83, Russia at 106, India at 120 and
Brazil at 122.

The "Helicopter" Service Awards
I find myself increasingly putting the service I receive
from organisations into one of two categories
either "outstanding" or " lousy" - there doesn't
seem to be just 'average' any more.
I've decided, therefore, to introduce and list my new
"Golden Helicopter"
outstanding service awards and "Ditched
Helicopter" lousy service awards
You'll find the story behind each in my Blog
Please add your comments and any
recommendations of your own for awards.
