I'm currently attending the first global sales
conference of a Group where I am a Non-
Executive Director. They are in the enviable position
that I believe all businesses strive to be in - they
have many opportunities for growth - their problem is
simply which to address and when. I have no doubt
that their continuing success will result from a
prioritising of those opportunities, based upon the
best long term return, and then a tight focus one or
two at a time.
Unfortunately I see so many businesses that try to
address every opportunity that they see and only
succeed in losing focus, diluting their efforts and
achieving very little.
I recently carried out a business audit that I had
offered in a charity auction - of a new upmarket
restaurant in Singapore.
What we found here was simply a need for focus: -
the restaurant "theme" was not clear or consistent,
the target clientele not identified, the menu was far
too large and unfocussed and the owner needed to
differentiate the more important from the less
important in the short-term. We are now working
with him to help bring more focus to the business and
I'm sure that that will help significantly to bring the
improved success that he seeks.
No matter what your business, no matter its size or
market sector, maintaining that tight focus on what?s
important, including your business purpose, your
markets and your people, will pay dividends.
Remember ? if you want to eat an elephant
you have to slice it up!

PS. UK readers please see the side panel for details of my next public half day workshop in Guildford on 24th November. Places are limited and going fast !

Five Secrets to Showing Your Customers You Really Care
- don't lose them through 'percieved indifference'
During our recent online poll, we asked the following
question:
What upsets you the most when receiving poor
customer
service?
Eighty percent of the poll participants said the ?I
don?t care
attitude? of the person serving them upsets them the
most.
Businesses lose billions in revenue each year
because customers feel the organizations don?t care
about
their business enough to make an effort to keep
them. It
takes five times more effort to win over a new
customer than
to keep an existing customer.
Then why does this happen? No training or poor
training
has a lot to do with it.
Here are five secrets to showing your customers you
really
do care about their situations when interacting with
them:

The Language of Color
(or Colour!)
In a world already full of acronyms and codes, who
would have thought that something as simple as
color could join in the confusion? Knowing the
different color models and how they are used is not
only helpful in getting the visual results you want it is
critical to staying on budget.
Of the many color models available, there are really
only three in which you need any fluency: CMYK,
PMS and RGB.
CMYK Color
This acronym stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and
black. CMYK is also known as process color, full
color, 4 color, and 4c. The colors are versions of the
primary colors, blue, red, yellow and black. They
create full color images like you would see in a
magazine. Choose CMYK when you need life-like,
realistic color, more than two colors, have a large
press run, or are printing only on your office printer.

Rules to Setting Business Goals and Objectives:
Why and How to be SMART
We all know that nothing runs without a plan, and a
plan cannot run without having its objectives set.
That applies to any kind of plan, whether we're
talking business or personal finances, university
degrees or NGO programs, website promotion or
weight loss.
Setting objectives and milestones is of crucial
importance for any planning activity and is the core
of its success, or failure. Knowing how to set
objectives is not exactly rocket science in terms of
complexity, but any strategist should know the basic
rules of how to formulate and propose objectives. We
will see in this article why objectives play such a
major role within a company's planning and strategic
activities, how they influence all business processes,
and we will review some guidelines of setting
objectives.
