Synthetic Fluids?

We frequently get asked if synthetic fluids can be used in power steering systems.

As you know, or should know, the correct fluid for any steering gear is determined by the manufacturer of the gear. So we contacted both Ross/TRW and R.H. Sheppard. This is what each had to offer.

ROSS/TRW

Synthetic fluid IS NOT recommended.

R.H. Sheppard

Yes you can use synthetic oil with Sheppard M-Series power steering gears. We (Sheppard) have tested hydracarbon base, polyalphaolefins base (PAO), and polyolester base, all work fine. They, (Sheppard) recommend using Mobil 1 synthetic oil.

See page 6 at this link

BAB Steering does not recommed the use of Synthetic Fluids.

New Ross/TRW THP Gears for 2007

The new 2007 engines can also affect the steering system. The emission equipment, ceramic filters and converters, on the 2007 engines leaves less room for the steering gear which is now 25% to 30% smaller and can increase the maximum system pressure from 2500 psi to 3000 psi. Ross/TRW has designed a new gear called the THP which is available as a THP45 and THP60 model. The THP60 is pictured above. It has 5 mounting tangs. The THP45 only has 3.

The part number for the THP can be found in the same place as the TAS, the flat spot on the end of the gear opposite the input shaft.

The THP is also an automatic adjusting poppet valve gear. The adjustment procedure is the same as for TAS gear.

NOTE: Automatic DOES NOT mean you do nothing it means you must follow the correct adjustment procedure for the poppet valves to be automatically adjusted.

New Freightliner
Rack & Pinion Gear

This is the new Freightliner Rack & Pinion Steering Gear. It's only available through Freightliner who has been testing the unit since 2005. It is an axle mounted gear that connects to the tie rod tube.  It has a cast aluminum housing and is small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. We are not sure that it will hold up but will keep you posted as information becomes available to us.
