Englefield Symphonies Newsletter
"Something Cool"
Composer Richard Englefield's symphonic
poem "Something Cool" has blossomed like the
rose at left - Very Smooth...... The composer of
twelve symphonies has recently completed the
works - a full symphony composition with three
delightfully fun and enjoyable movements. Duration
of the composition is approximately 15 minutes -
approximately five minutes per movement.
Mr. Englefield had this to say about his latest smooth
symphony. "Copland departed from his delightful
traditions and composed a jazz symphony. Duke
Ellington departed from his traditional ensemble group
to compose his jazz symphony. I was brought up on
jazz and departed from my adopted symphony
paradigm returning home to my youthful preferences
Cool Swing and what we call Jazz. There is far more
to the story"
Mr. Englefield said the full symphony orchestra is the
perfect venue for smooth music. Utilizing bass
clarinet, oboe and contra bassoon with dramatic
timpani interludes far exceeds the limitations of jazz
ensembles. He also extolled the variety of
alternatives available with strings complimenting the
smooth interludes by bassoon and saxophone, etc.
Often the various instrumental sections take up the
call for rhythmic sounds most typical of drums.
In unique fashion, Englefield colors his jazz
composition with good old fashioned boogie sounds
from the piano. He then transends the rhythmic jazz
themes with classical style counter-point and
descants that are incredibly beautiful in their
accompaniment. The piano drifts into beautiful
passages quite often. Since beginning composition of
symphonies twelve years ago, Mr. Englefield's music
has always been referred to as "uniquely different".
Mr. Englefield has composed a beautifully smooth
symphony that will tempt even the most timid to
"get up and dance!"
