Welcome 2012

 ask the expert

Q.  We moved into our new home a year ago.  There's still pictures leaning against the walls.  I need picture hanging tips.  Help!

A.  Let's go with first things first.  Granted,  picture hanging mechanics aren't very sexy but art crashing to the floor isn't either.  Safety and security is as important as achieving a  balanced look you're happy with.

Buy the right kind of hook for your artwork's weight. If you want to  "hang it and forget it", use two picture hooks per piece. Not only does this provide added security but it helps art remain level over time, compared to items hung from a single point.

How To Create A Fabulous   Grouping

For a unified and harmonious result, look closely at the pieces. Do you notice a shared theme or subject?  What do you collect that you'd like to showcase? What colors run throughout your artwork? When working with family photos, would you prefer grouping them chronologically or highlighting a particular era?  Make it meaningful and create visual depth at the same time with a treasure-filled shadowbox or two resting on a wall shelf.

A little planning up front goes a long way in getting everything installed the way you want it.  Drawing it out on paper or arranging  pieces on the floor first can help you visualize.

Yes, hanging art at eye level (the center is 60" from the floor) iscobalt wall plates.jpg the rule of thumb but what about multiple pieces?  Find the center of the grouping you've created and it can be 60" or higher and still be comfortable to view.  Don't be surprised if you find the center is actually your wall.  That's cool.  Remember proportion and scale when you ceilings are higher than 8-9 feet.

We identify and number multiple pieces in advance of installing them.  When a client moves, they have a diagram and precise system in place to recreate the original grouping.

TOP TIPSA one-nail picture hook holds 30 pounds or lighter. A two-nail  hook holds pieces that are about 50 pounds. A three-nail hook holds pieces that are about 75 to 100 pounds. Avoid the temptation to use push pins, nails or screws (and drive them in with one of the shoes you're wearing!).

Take 10 minutes the next time you're shopping and stock a clearBox for art hangers divided box with an assortment of picture hanging hooks.  Keep adhesive dots and half inch square rubber bumpers for the back corners on hand, too.  Ditch the hanging wire and get D rings instead that simply screw into frames.

The color gurus have spoken.   This year's tantalizing color choice is all about bold.  Drama. Sizzle.   Pantone quite literally combed the world looking for color influences in choosing 2012's color of the year.

2012 Color of the year

Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it.  Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.

An exciting way to add this new color is with PWP  - pillows with punch.  Looking for an inexpensive way to perk up your home? Paint a wall in Tangerine Tango for a dynamic burst of energy in the kitchen, entryway or hallway.

Who Will Love This  Color?

Tangerine Tango roomOrange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. Kids love it and accept it readily. Foodies will love it, too.

As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulating your appetite. Howard Johnsons' orange and turquoise signs of yesteryear and Whataburger's crisp orange and white logo may make us hungry but admittedly not necessarily for healthy food. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.

Inspiring New Designers Portfolio Rendering
We recently served on a panel of interior design professionals tasked with reviewing the portfolios of 11 talented design students at Lone Star College - Kingwood's campus.

To see creative minds at work as they put together innovative materials and expressive color combinations was amazing. Attention to detail, keen knowledge of design principles and a strong work ethic was evident as each student showcased their work.

We've enjoyed a long standing relationship with Kingwood's Interior Design Department. The best interns we've hired were students there.

If you know of someone (aged 16-100!) who is interested in design studies, we recommend their fine program.
