Are You Making These

Four Color  Mistakes?

1. Using complimentary colors in equal proportions. This is a design no-no.   For example, the traditional holiday colors red and green are complimentary colors.  Violet and yellow are, too (visualize the impact of pansies in our winter gardens).  We can live with them comfortably for a season but to avoid  year 'round color overload, soften one of the colors by adding white or a touch of grey.

2. Choosing paint color first and then finding fabric and furniture to go with it.  With more than 700 colors on average in a paint company's line up, it makes more sense to choose paint last.

3. You may have heard the saying "never let your Mother brush your hair when she's mad".  Rushing your painting project can feel almost the same way.

Of course you're excited about getting a fab result but you're more likely to experience painter's remorse if you don't test the color(s) first on a poster board or your actual wall. Give it a day or two under several lighting conditions to make sure it's right before you dive in.

4. Dreaming of new colors for your home but feeling paralyzed by fear of making a mistake, afraid of what other people will think, etc.? Just do it - the right way, of course!

Inspiring  Design Legends

As Coco Chanel was to fashion, Dorothy Draper was to decorating.

Dorothy Draper
1889-1969

She was a bold pioneer, dominating the field, not only in New York but nationally, from 1925 to 1960 when she was named the most influential tastemaker in America.

Draper became her own brand, long before that was ever done. She put out newspaper and magazine columns, how-to books, and even holiday wrapping paper. She was on the covers of Time and Life magazines. Interiors she did were widely described as "draperized."

Extending her influence far beyond residential interiors, Draper made her mark on big-city hotels, resorts, offices, department stores, and apartment buildings-she even styled automobile and airplane interiors.

Famous Draper Quotes

"I'll always put in one controversial item, it makes people talk."

"If you are collector, let other people share your pride and joy. Don't sprinkle your collection out of sight in a meaningless jumble. Notice how groups of small objects, when they are well arranged, become important and effective. Remember that repetition is a form of emphasis."

"Decorating is just sheer fun: a delight in color, an awareness of balance, a feeling for lighting, a sense of style, a zest for life and an amused enjoyment of the smart accessories of the moment."

Did You Know?

Draper shot to fame in 1939 with her book, Decorating Is Fun!  which empowered housewives to learn to decorate.  She  was the Design Director for Goodhousekeeping magazine during the 1940s.

True or False?

Asymmetrical design, as shown in the placement of the accessories on the mirrored chest below, is considered more formal than symmetrical design and is also said to strengthen the eye.   See answer below.

Answer: False.  It is symmetrical design that is more formal and reinforces balance, especially in the surrounding architecture.
