A. Although this cliche is often bandied about, the real intention is to find balance in our surroundings. In the hundreds of homes we've worked with, it's rare to find a homeowner who says "let's get rid of everything and start over."
 While people are staying in place rather than moving, the design challenge is to figure out how to skillfully edit what no longer works and keep what is loved and treasured. Less does not necessarily equal sleek and modern (thank goodness!). But it does encourage us to think about what's meaningful to us and what brings us joy. For example, when we re-arrange the contents of bookcases or freshen up tabletops, mantels, etc., what is not displayed is just as important as what is. That's the "a ha" moment when less becomes more. |
