Q. I keep hearing the word transitional used as a design style but what does it mean?
A. Transitional style is a naturalistic design that is highly stylized, but still shows some recognizable elements. We call it a "bridge" style because it takes aspects of both modern and traditional design and blends them together seamlessly.
Inherent in transitional styling is the flexibility to have fun and do the unexpected. For example, this fabulous hand-tailored sofa by Hancock and Moore evokes a traditional art deco feel. Yet when you look closely, you'll see leather embossing in a croc pattern. We're pretty sure no giant kiwi colored crocodiles were sacrificed to make this dramatic transitional sofa.
This new color blocked area rug features elements drawn from nature and then as a surprise adds a traditional damask pattern to the mix. That's the beauty of transitional - contemporary design's sleek lines and stark minimalism are replaced by the coziness, comfort, and lived in appeal of traditional decor.
When done well, updating your home with transitional pieces brings a classic and sophisticated appeal that makes the difference between a ho-hum room and a wow! room. Still not sure? Call on us - we'd love to help.

The Rainbow's Secrets Revealed
A rainbow is one of nature's phenomena that fascinates people of all ages. However, despite this fascination, most of us have only scattered recollections of what we were taught about the science of rainbows. We know to look for them when the sun comes out on a rainy day; thanks to the "ROY G. BIV" mnemonic device taught in elementary school, we can recite the colors; and most of us have accepted the fact that there's no pot of gold at their end. But there's plenty to rainbows that might surprise you.
Back to Basics A rainbow is an optical effect that occurs when sunlight low in the sky is refracted through droplets of water in the air. The raindrops act as prisms and separate the white light of the sun into the colors of the light spectrum. The rainbow appears curved because the viewer can only see the prism effect from droplets that are at just the right angle from the light source and the viewer's perspective. A person standing just a few feet away is actually seeing a completely different rainbow - that is, one refracted from different raindrops.
A double rainbow, an even greater rarity, appears when the light refracts twice through the raindrop. The second bow is a much fainter reflection of the original one, with the order of the colors reversed.

Easy Shutter Check-Up
Spring is the perfect time to adjust the louver tension in your shutters panels. A sign of quality we appreciate is the ability to insert a phillips head screwdriver into the recessed hole on the edge of each shutter frame.
Turn clock-wise to tighten so your louvers stay in place as you adjust your vertical tilt-rod up or down. Resist the urge to use the individual louvers to open and close them. Using the tilt-rod assures you of the tightest closure and the smoothest operation. |

Clients Decide to Improve, Not Move
"We looked at model homes for months and really thought we would have to move to get the features we wanted. A neighbor suggested we call a designer before we made our final decision. We found Beth's website and fell in love with her work."
"She met with us and we shared our dream for a more open floorplan, an updated kitchen without spending a fortune and most importantly a warm, comfortable, relaxing family room where we could casually entertain our family and friends. The floor plan, furnishings, fabrics, and accessories she selected were perfect for our setting and were exactly what we had envisioned. Beth is easy to work with and the design process was virtually stress-free."
