President Franklin D. Roosevelt
Designed A Special Retreat
 Built in 1938 to 1939 in Hyde Park, New York, Hill-Top Cottage was the most poignant and personal reminder of FDR's private life while he was President. It was unique at the time because he and architect Henry Toombs used the accessibility principles of what is called Universal Design today.
FDR was mostly confined to a wheelchair due to his polio-related paralysis and could only walk short distances with great difficulty and assistance, a fact he and others concealed from the public. Perhaps most importantly, Hill-Top Cottage was built with one flat floor and everything he could need or want was within easy reach of someone in a sitting position. The house is open to the public as as part of the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historical site. Read more about Universal Design below. |
