Annual Meeting |
BEAC's 2011 Annual Meeting was held on December 6, 2011. Awards were given to:
- Mark Schwarz, for his 7 years of service as a BEAC Director, including holding the Chair position in 2009.
- Jan Chizzonite, for his 4 years of service as a BEAC Director, including holding the positions of Treasurer and Secretary.
- Herb Marshall, for his many years of service as Chair of the Certification Committee.
The Annual Meeting also serves as the inauguration of the new Board of Directors. We welcome Joseph Cotier of Elm Consulting Group to the BEAC Board. Joe is a CPEA and member of The Auditing Roundtable Board of Directors.
The 2012 Executive Committee was elected during the Annual Meeting:

NEW - Certified Process Safety Auditor |
BEAC announces a new certification program:
Certified Process Safety Auditor (CPSA)
The CPSA is an attestation of a process safety auditor's education, experience, training, personal and professional skills and attributes, and adherence to the BEAC Code of Ethics.
"Professional Experience Recognition" will be accepted during Phase 1, and is a way for individuals to obtain the CPSA designation before the CPSA exam is validated and finalized.
Phase 1 / Phase 2 comparison
The Phase 1 deadline for applications is September 30, 2012 (documentation deadline is December 31, 2012).

BEAC is seeking volunteers to serve on BEAC committees. If you are interested, send an email to wacha@beac.org.
Certification Committee
Mark Schwarz was recently appointed Chair of the Certification Committee. Herb Marshall, the previous Chair, will remain on the committee. Herb's many years of service as Committee Chair were sincerely appreciated!
Ethics Committee
The Ethics Committee has been discussing a possible change to the Continuing Professional Development requirements which would require a certain level of Ethics training, similar to a requirement of the ABIH. Current discussion has centered on the types of Ethics courses currently available and their relevancy for EHS Auditors.
Exam Committee
- BEAC held a Question Writer's Workshop for the Health & Safety and Environmental Compliance exams on January 8, 2012. We anticipate holding these workshops on a regular basis
- The Exam Committee has been working with Normandeau Associates to update the BEAC Management System exam. We anticipate the updated exam will be ready during the first quarter 2012.
- The committee is seeking additional members, to assist with exam question development and grading essays.

Advocacy |
- BEAC provided comments to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regarding Conflict Minerals Reports. The comments supported the use of Performance Audits as an appropriate audit standard for the Conflict Minerals Reports under SEC, cited the BEAC Standards for inclusion as acceptable auditing standards, and promoted appropriate auditor expertise and certification for various audits within a conflict minerals management system. BEAC's comments can be viewed here.
- BEAC has been invited to participate on the Intersociety Forum, hosted by the American Society of Safety Engineers. The forum is comprised of chief staff and volunteer officers from various EHS organizations.

Auditing Roundtable Training |
The Auditing Roundtable provides a variety of training options for EHSS auditors.
Training courses provide participants with the fundamental principles, skills, procedures, techniques and regulatory knowledge necessary to conduct EHS audits properly and in conformance with BEAC auditing Standards.
Although these courses were not specifically designed as exam prep courses, individuals desiring to obtain BEAC auditor certification will benefit significantly from them....and current CPEAs can gain training hours to meet the BEAC Continuing Professional Development requirement.
Three training courses are currently offered:
- EHS Basic Auditing Skills
- Environmental Compliance Auditor
- Health and Safety Compliance Auditor
AR offers these courses at various times and locations throughout the year; companies can also arrange to have the courses presented at a specific location. Link to training courses.

BEAC is an independent non-profit corporation, created in 1997 as a joint venture between The Auditing Roundtable and The Institute of Internal Auditors to issue professional auditor certifications relating to environmental, health & safety, security, sustainability, social responsibility (EHS), and other scientific fields.
BEAC applicants must meet a variety of qualification criteria. Once approved, they are awarded the professional designation of Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA).
