Advocacy

By Doug Hileman, P.E., CPEA; Chair, BEAC Marketing Committee

"In 2011, there were 50 job postings that required a CPEA, and another 100 job postings that mentioned CPEA as a desirable credential.

In 2011, BEAC was notified of 30 Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for an estimated $100 million in work where a CPEA was a requirement to fulfill at least a portion of the scope of work.  We were notified of another 100 RFPs for an estimated $2 gazillion of work where a CPEA was mentioned as a distinguishing credential."

Wouldn't it be nice if we could say this?  Wouldn't it be nice if you could quote statements like these to your management and your clients?  Wouldn't it be nice if the market understood the value of using experienced, credentialed EHS auditors as much as we do?  As CPEAs, we know the importance of experience.  We know what we do to maintain current knowledge and skills in our field.  And we know that this provides value to our companies, our clients, our profession - and to human health and the environment.  Yet, in the current economy, everything is being called into question - including how EHS audits are done, and by whom.

BEAC wants to gather data on the demand for CPEAs.  We'd also like CPEAs to help stimulate the demand for experienced, credentialed CPEAs.  We'd like to drive the demand to THREE gazillion dollars of work per year.  But we need your help.

1.        If you see job postings, or Requests for Proposals in the EHS field, see if they mention CPEA as a requirement or something that differentiates the respondent from others.

·         If they do, FANTASTIC! BEAC would like to know about this.  We've developed a short questionnaire that will take 3 - 5 minutes to complete.  This will help us capture information.

·         If they don't, see if you can get them to add it.  Contact the hiring manager or someone you know at the company.  Explain the hurdles you went through to get (and maintain!) your CPEA, and why this would be worthwhile.  If you need help, BEAC can try.

2.       If you are hiring staff (full-time, part-time, contractor, or otherwise), or if you are involved in writing an RFP, include the CPEA credential as a requirement or a differentiator.  Take the opportunity to highlight to your management the high standards for a CPEA and the benefits this credential provides to your organization.  Fill out the short survey so we can capture this information.

Help us get to $3 gazillion.  This, in turn, will help you get value from your credential, and show your organization/ clients the value of experience.

Greenhouse Gas Verifier

The International Federation of Accountants (www.ifac.org) proposed International Standard on Assurance Engagement 3410 - Assurance Engagements on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Statements ("Standard") in January 2011. ISAE 3410 outlines credentials for accountants performing GHG emissions verification. ISAE 3410 makes little or no mention of other organizations already involved GHG emissions inventory development or verification. ISAE 3410 did not mention the Environmental Auditing profession at all, and did not take into account the value of experience in operations, compliance, or technical subject matter of GHG emissions. In a tight race against the commenting deadline, Doug Hileman, CPEA and Marketing Committee Chair, prepared and submitted comments to IFAC. Doug's comments addressed:

  • Environmental Auditing and other Verifications
  • GHG Emissions verifications programs
  • Distinction between ISAE 3410 and other assurance
  • Compliance and transparency

Doug's comments can be found here.

Raising the profile of the EHS Auditing profession, and raising the awareness of the value of experienced, credentialed EHS Auditors will benefit all CPEAs and our clients/ organizations. The ideal process is for BEAC to establish a work group, collect additional comments from CPEAs, and encourage CPEAs and their companies to submit comments of their own. Next time? If you are aware of proposed regulations or standards where the value of our profession and our credential would be useful, please contact the BEAC office.

Code of Ethics / Disciplinary Actions

A distinguishing mark of a profession is acceptance by its members of responsibility to the interests of those it serves. BEAC applicants and CPEAs must adhere to and maintain high Standards of Conduct to effectively discharge this responsibility.

The BEAC Ethics Committee is responsible for overseeing and implementing the BEAC Code of Ethics, addressing issues of professional responsibility, and serving as the panel or tribunal that conducts due process hearings as required by the BEAC Bylaws.

Available on the BEAC website are the Disciplinary Procedures, flowchart of the process, and Ethics Complaint Form.

BEAC will also pursue cases of individuals falsely claiming to hold BEAC certification in which there is clear evidence of the unauthorized use.

Auditing Roundtable Training

The Auditing Roundtable provides a variety of training options for EHSS auditors.

Training courses provide participants with the fundamental principles, skills, procedures, techniques and regulatory knowledge necessary to conduct EHS audits properly and in conformance with BEAC auditing Standards.
