Board of Environmental,Health&Safety Auditor Certifications (BEAC)
Board of Environmental, Health & Safety Auditor Certifications (BEAC) Newsletter
Accredited Certification for the EH&S Auditor

April 2011
Greetings!

There's nothing like spring to energize new initiatives and bolster resolve!

BEAC begins each year with a new Board Chair.  This year we are pleased to welcome Jim Sprowl to the position.  Jim served as an EHS auditor for many years at General Motors, and is now the Environmental Audit Manager with Goldenberg, Schneider and Groh, LPA.

Some new initiatives that BEAC will be working on include two new certification specialties, improved exam delivery, and updates to exam Study Guides.  And our website is in need of updating - I hope you will complete a survey to help us identify the features that will help you the most (see box to the right).

Participation in the BEAC LinkedIN group has grown to 1,000+ members.  As this provides a more participative and timely forum for news, we will be reducing the frequency of the newsletters from quarterly to every 4 months.  If you are not a member of the BEAC LinkedIN group, check it out - it's a good forum to network with other professionals, share your experience, and maybe pick up a few pointers.

Sincerely,

Wendy K. Acha

USDoL requests BEAC assistance

The United States Department of Labor (USDoL) updates their occupational listings on a regular basis, and one of the categories currently under review is that of "Environmental Compliance Inspectors."   This category has been identified as a Bright Outlook occupation - employment in this occupation is expected to grow rapidly in the next several years and large numbers of job openings are projected in this category.

BEAC was contacted by the subcontractor (RTI) which is conducting the job surveys for the USDoL.  They had reviewed the qualification criteria on the BEAC website, and determined that Environmental Compliance Auditors should be included under this classification.

The surveying organization asked for BEAC's help in identifying CPEAs who would be qualified and willing to complete the questionnaires.  Over 100 CPEAs volunteered, which was more than sufficient for the required sample population!

Code of Ethics / Disciplinary Actions

A distinguishing mark of a profession is acceptance by its members of responsibility to the interests of those it serves. BEAC applicants and CPEAs must adhere to and maintain high Standards of Conduct to effectively discharge this responsibility.

The BEAC Ethics Committee is responsible for overseeing and implementing the BEAC Code of Ethics, addressing issues of professional responsibility, and serving as the panel or tribunal that conducts due process hearings as required by the BEAC Bylaws.

Available on the BEAC website are the Disciplinary Procedures, flowchart of the process, and Ethics Complaint Form.

BEAC will also pursue cases of individuals falsely claiming to hold BEAC certification in which there is clear evidence of the unauthorized use.

Benchmarking Study
EHS / Internal Audit?

65% of companies that responded to a recent organizational
benchmarking study have the EHS audit program located within the corporate EHS department, 15% in the internal audit department, and the remaining 20%  scattered among various departments - legal, operations, corporate compliance, and various others, including engineering, quality, and research.  Has this changed in recent years?
