The Changing Climate for EHS Auditing

Auditing programs must change as quickly as business in general in order to remain relevant. What changes are your colleagues implementing to remain relevant? What strategies are they employing to improve and support their business objectives? What tools would make your job more efficient?

These are the issues to be discussed at the Fall Meeting of The Auditing Roundtable, the oldest and largest organization of professional EHS and management systems auditors.

When: September 8 - 10, 2010

Where: Hyatt Regency Penn's Landing Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA 19106

Hear how others are assessing sustainability information as part of their EHS compliance and management systems audits. Find out how others are coordinating self-assessment activity with their corporate auditing programs.

See the agenda here.

BEAC CPEAs can receive CPD credit for attending the conference and pre-conference CEU courses.

Are you IN?

"People keep inviting me to LinkedIn, so I finally set up a profile. Big deal - now what?"

You're right, if all you do is set up a profile, you won't get anything out of it. The next step is to join groups that focus on topics you're interested in: trade groups, alumni associations, member organizations, even your own company might have one. You get to set parameters on receiving updates from those groups. I prefer weekly email summaries, but you can also opt out completely, or get daily postings. The BEAC group has over 860 members.

Once you've joined some groups, check out the discussions, add constructive comments to share your wisdom, pose questions of your own, post articles of interest, check out job postings. It can help you discover new insights to your industry, and put you in contact with interesting professionals you might not meet otherwise.

"Socialnomics"

Smart phones (Blackberry, iPhone) eliminated the time clock, and for many, "work" is no longer just a location with a fixed time slot. YouTube furthered the concept of immediate web exposure, and Twitter accounts are now used by many professionals to send "on-the-spot" updates on industry issues to their contacts.

At the recent IIA International Conference in Atlanta, the conference delegates were able to follow the event through several social media websites:
-- iCON mobile phone application
-- 134 Facebook followers
-- 121 LinkedIn followers
-- 73 Twitter followers

A video about "socialnomics" was also shown at the conference; you can view the Social Media Revolution video here (audio included, you may want to mute your speakers if you do not want to distract others).

You can either participate in the information flow, or let others take over....and deal with the consequences.

An Answer to your Question

BEAC frequently hears this question: "My company is cutting back on training expenses and travel costs. Besides attending professional conferences, what are some other ways I can meet BEAC's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirement?"  Here's some suggestions:

Write an article:
Generally, one full journal page of single-spaced print is equal to 2 hours of CPD credit, with a maximum of 12 hours allowed in the Publications category for each year (i.e. 24 hours per biennial CPD reporting period). See the CPD guidelines for more detailed information.

Make a Presentation or provide Training:
You can provide training within your organization. Also, local chapters of various professional organizations are always looking for new presentations. A maximum of 12 hours is allowed in the Oral Presentations category for each year.

Here are some links to information on local chapters for several organizations:
Participate in professional activities:
A maximum of 12 hours are allowed in the Participation category each year for:

a) Participation as an officer or committee member in a professional industry organization related to EHS or auditing.

b) Participation in a quality assurance review (also known as a "peer" review).

c) Pro bono participation in a community volunteer program relevant to EHS or auditing issues. See the CPD guidelines for program requirements.

Other no/low cost activities:

Audit activities:
A maximum of 12 hours may be awarded in the "Other" category each year for participation as an audit team member or management of an EHS auditing function.

Exam question writing:
CPEAs may submit questions to be included on future BEAC examinations. Question writers should follow the guidelines of the Question Writer's guide published on the BEAC website, and must include source references. Two (2) hours will be awarded for each question accepted by the BEAC Examination Committee.

Achievement of other certifications:
A maximum of 6 hours may be awarded each year for passing other certifications, which include the following: CIA, CPA, CSP, CIH, CHMM, CRSP.

Auditing Roundtable Training

The Auditing Roundtable provides a variety of training options for EHSS auditors.

Training courses provide participants with the fundamental principles, skills, procedures, techniques and regulatory knowledge necessary to conduct EHS audits properly and in conformance with BEAC auditing Standards.

Although these courses were not specifically designed as exam prep courses, individuals desiring to obtain BEAC auditor certification will benefit significantly from them....and current CPEAs can gain training hours to meet the BEAC Continuing Professional Development requirement.

Three training courses are currently offered:
  • EHS Basic Auditing Skills
  • Environmental Compliance Auditor
  • Health and Safety Compliance Auditor
AR offers these courses at various times and locations throughout the year; companies can also arrange to have the courses presented at a specific location. Link to training courses.

For more than a decade the Board of Environmental, Health and Safety Auditor Certifications (BEAC) has been working to ensure that organizations and government are staffed with professional auditors who ensure we live in a healthy and safe world.

BEAC is an independent non-profit corporation, created in 1997 as a joint venture between The Auditing Roundtable and The Institute of Internal Auditors to issue professional auditor certifications relating to environmental, health & safety, security, sustainability, social responsibility (EHS), and other scientific fields.

BEAC applicants must meet a variety of qualification criteria. Once approved, they are awarded the professional designation of Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA).

The BEAC certification is accredited by the Council of Engineering & Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB). The CPEA designation is recognized by the U.S. DoE for greenhouse gas verifications, and accepted by agencies in other countries.

Sincerely,

Code of Ethics / Disciplinary Actions

A distinguishing mark of a profession is acceptance by its members of responsibility to the interests of those it serves. BEAC applicants and CPEAs must adhere to and maintain high Standards of Conduct to effectively discharge this responsibility.

The BEAC Ethics Committee is responsible for overseeing and implementing the BEAC Code of Ethics, addressing issues of professional responsibility, and serving as the panel or tribunal that conducts due process hearings as required by the BEAC Bylaws.

Available on the BEAC website are the Disciplinary Procedures, flowchart of the process, and Ethics Complaint Form.

BEAC will also pursue cases of individuals falsely claiming to hold BEAC certification in which there is clear evidence of the unauthorized use.
