A Gallery of Medical Marijuana; different types have differing effects

A Gallery of Medical Marijuana

Positions on the efficacy of medical marijuana vary, but thousands of patients suffering from cancer, AIDS, and other diseases claim marijuana provides them relief from devastating symptoms such as intractable nausea, vomiting and chronic pain.

In a 1997 article for the The New England Journal of Medicine, Jerome P. Kassirer, M.D., wrote that "physicians who prohibit prescribing marijuana for seriously ill patients are misguided, heavy-handed, and inhumane."

Different strains of marijuana have varying effects and target a variety of symptoms. We're putting a cost on this relief and giving the types of pain that are eased.

Nutritional Therapy in Myalgic
Encephalomyelitis or Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome
(ME/CFS): A Case Study

Our second paper, entitled "Nutritional Therapy in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS): A Case Study," was published in June 2012.

The paper shares a detailed case study of a patient receiving treatment from our nutrition department.  It is relatively easy to follow, and is a great example of how the OHC nutrition approach is about a lot more than just food and supplements.

Spencer Leek to Speak on the Fascia and Myofascial Release Massage

Saturday, September 15th 1-4:00 PM

Spencer Leek, the myofascial release therapist who works out ofThe Frida Center, will speak to us about the fascia, why we hurt and how myofascial release massage can help.

Releasing fascial restrictions helps remove pressure from pain sensitive structures. The lengthened fascia also creates space for easier movement and a greater range of motion. MFR hydrates fascia, thus allowing the fascial structures to glide upon one another more easily. MFR opens space for fluid and energy movement, facilitating greater circulation and communication - allowing the body to heal.

Having heard Spencer speak on this subject, I can tell you that he is a passionate, dynamic speaker and you don't want to miss this meeting!

Webinar: EFT or Tapping for Managing Pain and Other Symptoms
Tamara Staples - Pain CoachMonday, September 10th 6:30-8:00 PM (PDT)

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or Meridian Tapping is apowerful way to manage pain and other illness symptoms. It uses "tapping" on acupuncture meridians along with saying key phrases to calm the amygdala (the fight-or-flight area of the brain).

If you read Dr. Liptan's book "Figuring Out Fibromyalgia," you know that those of us with fibromyalgia have our nervous system stuck in the fight-or-flight response.  This is partly what causes increased muscle tension and pain.

Join us for this interactive webinar where you will get a chance to do some tapping.  You will learn how to design your own EFT tapping scripts so that you can employ this modality whenever and wherever you are in pain.

Walk in the Park

Saturday, September 8th 12-1:00 PM

Come join us for a walk in George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego.

George Rogers Park is Lake Oswego's first community park and one of its most diverse. Situated on the Willamette River, the park is the site of significant Native American activity over 10,000 years ago, as well as the center of Lake Oswego's industrial iron history. The park is 26 acres and contains athletic fields, tennis courts, children's playground, picnicing, riverfront access, walking trails, and a large natural area. Of particular interest to history buffs is the "Iron Furnace", which is listed on the National Historic register and one of the few reminders of Lake Oswego's industrial past. One of the best views of the Willamette River can be found near the furnace in the lower park.

Emphasis on Breathing Helps Massage Clients in Pain

Breathing for Pain ReliefBy Nicole Cutler, L.Ac.

Most bodyworkers are aware that breathing deeply helps relaxation. In fact, many guide their clients toward diaphragmatic breathing during a session to complement their work. Elevating the therapeutic utility of deep breathing even further, research demonstrates that breathing technique influences more than relaxation levels. Based on this groundbreaking study, bodywork practitioners have every reason to incorporate breath-work into every session for chronic pain. In addition, this study encourages practitioners to teach their clients diaphragmatic breathing techniques to reduce chronic pain in between bodywork visits.

Research led by Arthur Craig, Ph.D. from Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in collaboration with investigators in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University was published in the January 2010 edition of Pain, the journal of the International Association for the Study of Pain. This study demonstrated that controlled breathing at a slowed rate can significantly reduce feelings of pain. More details about their research are described below:

* The pain responses of women with the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia was measured and compared to healthy women of the same age.

* When the women performed slow breathing, their reactions to a moderately painful stimulus - brief pulses of heat from a probe placed on the palm - were reduced.

* Both groups of women reported less emotional discomfort and lower pain intensity when they slowed their normal breathing rate down by half.

* Although the benefit was greater and more consistent among the healthy study participants than those with fibromyalgia, even women with fibromyalgia benefitted from slowed breathing.

Webinar: Lyme Disease Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention Lyme Disease

If you are like me, you know very little about Lyme Disease.  Our August Webinar featured Trish McCleary, Founder and Legislative Advocate of S.L.A.M. (Sturbridge Lyme Awareness of Massachusetts) and Lyme Disease patient.

Trish was originally misdiagnosed with Fibromyalgia and arthritis before finally discovering the real problem was Lyme Disease.  With treatment, she now lives without the pain and symptoms that had devastated her life for so many years.

Trish spoke to us about the prevalence of Lyme Disease, its signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. She explained that the standard Lyme test is only accurate 40-60% of the time. It is imperative that you be tested by a specialty lab.
