How to Exercise with Chronic Pain
| |
It is almost across-the-board true that exercise has a positive impact on chronic pain. The trick is in starting low and going slow versus rushing headlong into a full workout that serves to flare your symptoms.
The source of your chronic pain will, to some extent, decide the exercise that is best for you. Many people think that they can't exercise with back pain. This iscategorically untrue. We even start people on exercise the day after back surgery," says Maria Mepham, a physical therapist at the Cleveland Clinic. Examples of appropriate exercise for back pain would be yoga or exercises in water (swimming, water aerobics). The same would be true for joint pain, such as knee or hip pain.
The following text is written about fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, but can also apply to other chronic pain conditions. It is a way to start slowly and monitor yourself so that you don't overdo or increase your exercise intensity or length too quickly.

Webinar: Q&A About Lyme Disease
Monday, August 13th 6:30-8:00 PM (PDT)
What do you know about Lyme Disease? Have you ever wondered if you might be infected? Do we have Lyme Disease here in Oregon?
Lyme disease is an infection caused by a spirochete (say "SPY-ROH-KEET") that humans can get from the bite of an infected deer tick. The spirochete's scientific name is Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme disease is called "The Great Imitator" because its symptoms mimic many other diseases. In fact, the symptom list could just as easily be fibromyalgia and ME/CFS! It can affect any organ of the body, including the brain and nervous system, muscles and joints, and the heart.
Lyme disease has been found on every continent except Antarctica. It is found all across the United States, with a particularly high incidence in the east, midwest, and west coast. It seems to be spreading.
In August, Trish McCleary, survivor and now advocate of Chronic Lyme disease will speak to us about what Lyme Disease is, how it is contracted, diagnosed and treated.

Walk in the Park
Saturday, August 11th 12-1:00 PM
Come join us for a walk in George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego.
George Rogers Park is Lake Oswego's first community park and one of its most diverse. Situated on the Willamette River, the park is the site of significant Native American activity over 10,000 years ago, as well as the center of Lake Oswego's industrial iron history. The park is 26 acres and contains athletic fields, tennis courts, children's playground, picnicing, riverfront access, walking trails, and a large natural area. Of particular interest to history buffs is the "Iron Furnace", which is listed on the National Historic register and one of the few reminders of Lake Oswego's industrial past. One of the best views of the Willamette River can be found near the furnace in the lower park.

7 Keys to Savvy Traveling with Fibromyalgia

In a prior lifetime, I used to travel quite a lot. So much, in fact, that I had elite airline status. That's over 50,000 miles trapped in an airplane, plus all the time on the ground trapped in a hotel. Some of that travel happened while my fibromyalgia was developing.
With all that traveling, I learned some tricks to make it a lot less painful and more enjoyable. Some of these things cost money. If they help you enjoy your trip-and survive it with grace-I suggest including them as part of your trip budget. Other items simply require a little more planning.
There's over 50 individual tips here, so pick and choose the ones that make the best sense for you!

July Recordings Available
Practical Tips for Managing Your Energy with Fibromyalgia In July, our co-leader and Fibromyalgia Health Coach, Tami Stackelhouse, provided practical, everyday tips to help us better manage our energy. She shared the tools that she used to manage her life, energy and illness to help her overcome most of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. This includes incorporating periods of rest and activity as well as learning your body's own rhythm and how best to work with it. Tami taught us about scheduling, working effectively with our calendars and how to protect our healing time. This means learning to say "no" when we need to and also asking for help when the situation calls for it. Practical Tips Video Recording Q&A About Medical Marijuana Have you thought about using Medical Marijuana? Maybe you have questions about how to get your card or where to get marijuana once you have your card. In 1972, the US Congress placed marijuana in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act because they considered it to have "no accepted medical use." Since then, 16 of 50 US states and DC have legalized the medical use of marijuana.
Proponents of medical marijuana argue that it can be a safe and effective treatment for the symptoms of cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, pain, glaucoma, epilepsy, and other conditions. They cite dozens of peer-reviewed studies, prominent medical organizations, major government reports, and the use of marijuana as medicine throughout world history.
This was a practical discussion by patients who have been through the process.
