TEACHER AUTHOR TEAMS MOBILIZING!
Indiana teachers Sally Hale, Wendy Dollarhide and Heather Bailey have teamed up with artist Terry Moore to develop 36 "Life Skills" digital content modules for students with special needs.
Sally, a special education teacher for almost 30 years, recently searched for high-tech digital educational materials to motivate and engage her students. Her search yielded few results. She says,"With the recent iPad roll-out in our school district, I wanted to find apps that related to functional academics, life skills, and independent living skills. What I found was that there was nothing out there in these areas."This led Sally to add "creator of educational iPad apps" to her professional resume! The first 18 of their new digital Space Board workbooks, the "Lunar" series, will be available for purchase from NeoLithix on iTunes sometime after January 1, 2012.

THE REVIEWS ARE POURING IN!
Read the recent rave reviews of SpaceBoards:
Joan Tanenhaus reviews the Space-Board Pre-K App in her insightful October article in "Closing the Gap", an online and printed publication for special education and rehabilitation. She says, "With this excellent app, students with grapho-motor difficulties can use the iPad to learn and practice their basic writing skills. This app, the beginning one in the series of 12, developed by classroom teachers, focuses on tracking and tracing, directionality, tracing large pictures, tracing basic shapes, numbers and upper and lower case letters. Using a matching technique (i.e., trace or draw a line from .... to .....), other preschool concepts are integrated into the learning (i.e. go-togethers, rhyming words, initial consonant sounds, matching skills, etc.). Within the app, there are 18 Skill Packets with about 20 pages .... Children can choose their pencil width and color to work in. There is an eraser, as well as the ability to clear the page completely. This gives users the opportunity to correct errors and to practice repeatedly ... There are also blank pages for creative drawing and blank ruled pages for creative writing. A stylus is recommended. This is a company that is committed to supporting the special needs population." More info is available on the "Closing the Gap" site here.
Best Apps for Kids says, "How EASY it is for chidren of all ages to learn Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies when they can write on digital workbooks created by great teachers ... Students use a stylus to write by hand the fun way ... digitally. The correct answers are displayed instantly next to their hand-written ones for quick and easy self-assessment. Tutorials are self-paced and encourage guilt-free repetition! First - Fifth grade age children (+ older children remedially) can hand-write in these workbooks countless times ... as opposed to "write-once and throw away" conventional paper workbooks. A great "green" product! Students' hand-written work is digitally stored & recorded for later review by parent, teacher or tutor." More info available on their site here.
