ASLM Hosts French-language Workshop

An ASLM co-sponsored French writing workshop is currently underway in Saly, Senegal. The workshop started on Monday, 16 January and will run until 27 January. Fifteen participants, four full-time mentors and four part-time mentors have come together to promote scientific manuscript-writing and create publication-worthy, peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts for inclusion in the African Journal of Laboratory Medicine (AJLM).

Experts from around the world (Senegal, Belgium, France, and the US) in laboratory medicine and epidemiology are volunteering as mentors for the workshop. Participants have come from 5 countries (Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Mali, and Senegal).

Workshop study topics range from disease specific prevalence and risk factors to laboratory testing techniques.

"I think this workshop is very important as a collaborative effort between partners," said Souleymane Mboup, director of the workshop. "Those trained here will be able to train others at the local level. This is a very good exercise for them, and will help to catalyze a larger process."

The workshop will contribute to the advent of the African Journal for Laboratory Medicine (AJLM) and aims to disseminate quality scientific research generated by African laboratories. The workshop will also help participants to better understand the manuscript submission process, specifically for submitting a manuscript to AJLM.

This is the first in ASLM's 2012 Writing Workshop Series, which will include workshops - both in English and in French - to assist participants with grant applications, protocols, and manuscripts. The next workshop, scheduled for March in Ethiopia, will focus on grant and proposal writing. Please watch the ASLM website for more information.
