The Hughes Academy School Improvement Council (SIC) is hard at work and we would like your help. Listed below are our SIC goals for the 2012-2013 school year. SIC subcommittees are currently being created for each of these goals. The chair of the subcommittee will subsequently contact you with details. General SIC meetings are held at noon on the second Thursday of each month, and anyone is welcome to attend.

Beta Club
8th Grade

Junior Beta Club Logo We will have a Beta Club meeting Wednesday, October 10 at 7:45 a.m. in the Media Center. We will go over the Poinsettia Fundraiser at that time. The fundraiser will run through October 24. If you would like to go ahead and start making contact with business you can.

We are selling red and white poinsettias. Prices are:

6.5" = $12

8" = $22

12" = $32

Money is due at the time order is placed. All money and orders should be turned in by October 24 to Mrs. Merck. Poinsettia's will be delivered November 27.

The profit from the sale of the poinsettia's will be placed into a general fund and dispersed equally between those participating. HOWEVER, you must sell a minimum of 5 plants in order to qualify. Also, anyone who sells over $120 worth of plants, you will be able to keep the profit from your sales (which will go towards the cost of the trip). If you do not sell $120 worth but you sell at least 5 plants, then your profit will go into the general fund and be divided between all of those who did not sell $120 worth or more.

7th and 8th Grade

We have 8 students on the waiting list but need 17 additional students to sign up to go to the convention. We can get a bus but now we need the people! I am attaching information about the convention and what we will be doing at the beach. Please email or call me to let me know that your child would like to attend (if he/she hasn't already signed up) by October 15. I have to release the bus if we do not need it by that date. Once we have the required number, I will let everyone know so that you can send in the deposit!

New Districts for State Senate, State House and School Board.

Did you know the districts for state senate, state house and school board have changed? With the election coming up on November 6, it's time to check your voter registration information to find which districts you're in.

Once you know your districts, find out who will be on the ballot for your districts. Then learn about the candidates before you vote.

Information can be found at the Public Education Partners website (www.pepgc.org). Click on "Public Policy" then "2012 Election." At this site you can find

  • Your districts for state senate, state house and school board
  • The list of candidates for these offices
  • Responses by school board candidates to a questionnaire.

All of state senate and house seats are up for election on November 6 as are six of the twelve seats on the school board.

Biographical information on all current members of the school board can be found at the Greenville County Schools website (www.greenville.k12.sc.us). Click on "Board of Trustees." To find biographical information about your current state senators and representatives go to the South Carolina Legislature website (www.scstatehouse.gov).

Important decisions on policies and funding affecting your school are made by our state legislature and by our school district board of trustees. 60% of the funding to operate our public schools comes from the state. Every year our state legislators pass budgets and laws that directly impact our children's education. One of the school board's most important tasks is making decisions on what to fund in the annual school district budget. They also make decisions on district-wide policy and program changes.
