Finalists for School District Superintendent: Make your voice heard!

NEWS

Multiple opportunities this week to learn about the three finalists for Superintendent of Greenville County Schools. The School Board of Trustees has identified three finalists for the position of school district superintendent. (See school district news release.) The trustees have invited the public to learn about the candidates as well as meet them in person.

One candidate will be featured each day this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Tuesday - Dr. Eugene White; Wednesday - Dr. Lynn Moody; and Thursday - Mr. Burke Royster.

Listen to, and meet, the candidates in person. Each day, Tuesday - Thursday, provides in-person opportunities to learn about each candidate and meet and talk with each one:
10:00 to 10:30 a.m. Attend the portion of the school board interview open to the public.
3:45 to 5:00 p.m. Attend the candidate drop in.
Both events will occur each day at the school district central office (directions).

Use the GreenvilleOnline website for free information on the candidates and to submit your questions. The Greenville News reports that video, profiles and resumes of all of the finalists will be accessible on their website. If you have questions for the candidates, please submit them at this site by the end of the day. News staff would like the public's input on questions to use in their candidate interviews.

Selection of new Superintendent on Saturday. The School Board of Trustees plans to meet in Executive Session on Saturday, March 24, to deliberate on the selection of the new superintendent of Greenville County Schools and to announce their choice immediately following the meeting.

OUR VIEW

The superintendent is the chief executive officer of our school district. In conjunction with the school board, the superintendent sets the overall direction and priorities for our schools. Changes and improvements to the operations, academics and extra-curricular opportunities at our schools will depend greatly on the leadership provided by this person.

Public Education Partners believes that the school district superintendent is not only a leader of our schools but also a leader for our community. All of us - parents, educators, business persons, community leaders and the wider community - have a stake in the person selected to lead our school district. Our participation in the selection process is critical to choosing the person best suited to provide the educational leadership needed in our community.

Vote in Primary Election on June 12

Primary elections will be held on Tuesday, June 12. A state senator and a state house member represent you in the state legislature.   Both of these positions as well as some county elected offices will be on the Republican and Democratic primary ballots.   All of the candidates will be known as of the March 31st filing deadline.

The primary election is often more important than the November election in determining your state legislators. This is because many state senate and house districts are heavily Republican or Democratic. In these districts the person who wins the majority-party primary will very likely win the November General Election.

You can vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary and you do not have to register as a Republican or a Democrat in order to vote.

In a primary election if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote (which can happen in races with three or more candidates), the two candidates with the most votes will compete in a run-off election two weeks later on June 26.   You are eligible to vote in a run-off election as long as you did not vote in the other party's primary.

Due to redistricting you may be in a new state senate and/or house district (as well as county council district). At www.scvotes.org you will be able to find your senate and house districts for the upcoming election, the candidates for those districts and where to vote.   It is expected that voter districts will be updated by May 1 and possibly sooner. Call the county election commission at (864) 467-7250 if you have questions.

If you are not registered to vote, you have until May 12 to do so.   The registration form and instructions can be found at www.scvotes.org. If you need assistance, again call the county election commission.
