Aquanauts Science Club

7th grade students from Hughes Academy of Science & Technology recently took a trip to Crystal River, FL to snorkel and swim with the manatee. The 40 students were accompanied by their science teachers, Amy Carabetta, Melanie Helling and Chris Taber, and are members of the school's Aquanauts club, a science club focused on the environment and recycling. The trip lasted 3 days and nights and included a 3 hour swim in the natural springs of Crystal River, one of the largest aquifers in the state and home to more than 400 West Indian manatees that migrate to this site each year for the warmth of the springs. After the manatee experience, students used snorkel equipment to float down the Rainbow River to observe the natural wildlife both in the water and around it. Students finished up their trip with a visit to the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. This once in a lifetime trip provided the students a unique learning opportunity and memories they will cherish forever.
