Jane Cooper Carson (1953--2012)

 

The Hughes Academy Faculty and PTSA wish to express deepest sympathy to the family of Jane Carson, upon her death this month in Greenville.  Beloved by her students and collegues, Jane was an Instructional Aide for Special Education at Hughes Academy for approximately twelve years. 


Memorials may be made to Augusta Heights Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 3018 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC  29605 or Open Arms Hospice, 1836 W. Georgia Road, Simpsonville, SC  29680.

Hughes Spring Sports Tryouts

Tryouts for Spring Sports will begin Monday, Jan. 30th. for Boys and girls soccer, baseball and girls softball.  See below for specific information.

 

Baseball Tryouts start Monday, Jan 30. 4 PM-6 PM.  Meet in the Cafeteria.
Tryouts will be January 30th, January 31st, and February 1st on the baseball field. All students trying out must pay the $10.00 insurance fee to Mr. McCoy or Mr. Morgan before they will be allowed to participate in tryouts. Please make sure your son understands the urgency of being on time. They will start at 4:00 p.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. so please be on time to pick your son up.
7th Graders who may be going on the Aquanauts trip will be allowed to tryout next week.  Please notify Coach Ware in advance.

 

If cuts have to be made, they will be announced at the end of tryouts on Wednesday

 

After the team is finalized, we will have a team meeting the next week on February 7th at 6:30 in the library to discuss other business and allow everyone to ask questions and I can address any concerns. Most of all, it will allow me to meet all of you.

Girls Soccer Tryouts start Monday, Jan. 30 Report to Room C104 Mr. Fisher's room.  3:45-5:30.

 

Tryout & Conditioning Practice Schedule 4 pm -5-30 pm

Students who want to make the team must attempt to make all practices unless the absence is excused.  7th Graders that are going on the Aquanauts Trip may tryout next week.

 

Any student who is participating in soccer needs to dress appropriately depending on the outdoor weather for the day. In addition, all students will need to bring soccer shoes and shin guards to all practices. Students who are trying out to be the goalie should bring goaltending gloves as well.

 

Boys Soccer Tryouts start Tues. Jan 31st from 4:00- 5:30, Wed. Feb.1, and Thursday, Feb.2.  7th Grade Students who are going on the Aquanauts Trip may tryout next week Tuesday, Feb. 7 and Wed. Feb 8th.

 

Eligibility Requirements for Middle School Sports:

 

Current 7th or 8th Grader with signed physical form turned in

No current grades below 75

No Out of School (OSS) Suspension Referrals all year long

No more than 2 In School Suspensions (ISS) Referrals during the school year

Pay a $10 Insurance Fee (Non-Refundable). Additional $17 will be needed if you make the team unless you played in the fall and already paid the fee.

Beta Club

There will be a meeting with our 8th grade Beta Club members on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:45 a.m. in the Media Center. We will be discussing our upcoming Parent Appreciation Night. Parent Appreciation Night is a night where your child will showcase his/her talent to all Beta Club parents. This is mandatory so please mark your calendars for Thursday, March 1. 


Please add the following dates to calendar as well:

 
February 23/24 -- Students need to let Mrs. Merck know what their talent will be for the talent show (Parent Appreciation Night). Your child may sign up individually or as a group. We will provide details to them at the meeting.

 
February 28 -- Mandatory -- Full rehearsal after school.

8th Grade Explorers Science Club 

The 8th grade Explorers science club dissected frogs at their last meeting to learn about similarities to human body systems. Students viewed a video tutorial and completed the activity under the supervision of club sponsor, Mrs. Lorie Thibodeaux. The club has planned a field trip to Six Flags over Georgia in May to study force and motion.

Student Course Registration
In February,  all students will be registering for next year's courses using the Student Registration System (SRS).  Parent's of 8th grade students should make plans to attend upcoming Curriculum Nights at your child's high school to learn more about offered courses, athletic eligibility, and freshmen academy requirements.  Information about the date and time of these events will be posted on our website.  Parents of returning Hughes students can attend our Curriculum Night on February 7, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Contact Ann-Marie Armstrong, guidance counselor, at 355-6203 for more information.
 Rising Raider Showcase
Greenville High School's Freshman Academy is excited to help you begin your transition from middle school to the Red Raider family. Please join us February 2 at 6:00pm to jump start your Academy Experience. You will meet your future teachers, find out about registration, and learn about all of the academic and extracurricular offerings at GHS.

Best Singer in the District Competition 

Dakara Perrin (current 7th grader) is a finalist for the Best Singer in the District competition!  Auditions were held this past weekend and out of a field of 69 students from 33 schools, she was selected as a finalist by three impartial judges.


The final event is being held on March 2nd at Greenville Technical College's auditorium.  Tickets will be available several weeks before the event.  It will be quite a show and there will be an elementary, middle and high school division winner as well as an overall champion.  Dakara was last years middle school division winner.

Winter Wonderland Dance

winterThe Winter Wonderland Dance for 6th, 7th and 8th graders will be held Friday, February 10th from 7 - 9 pm.  Food and Drinks will be provided, as well as a DJ playing your favorite songs.  Advance tickets will be sold during lunch Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for $10 the week of the dance.  At the door, tickets will be $12.00.  Dress code is semi-formal - no jeans or shorts.  Also, do not forget to bring your money to buy souvenir pictures of you and your friends.  If you would like additional information or would like to volunteer to chaperone for the night, please contact Melissa Byrne at, arcbyrne@aol.com.  You don't want to miss this fun evening!!
