Greetings!
At Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, we build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. One way we do that is by providing girls with opportunities to help others and really make a difference in their community. April Showers is our annual personal care item drive. According to Operation Food Search, April Showers provides 99 percent of all personal care items distributed in the region, and we absolutely couldn't do it without your help and generosity. Personal care items like shampoo and soap might not seem like a luxury to most of us, but those in our community who can't afford them suffer greatly. Think about a child who goes to school and is bullied because he or she doesn't have soap to take a shower or toothpaste to brush their teeth. Think about a mother who can't afford diapers for her new baby. Everyone deserves these basic items, and this is your chance to lend a helping hand. In honor of our 100th Anniversary, we are on a mission to collect more than one million personal care items to set a Guinness World Record. With your help, I know we can make this the biggest April Showers drive ever and set that record. There are several ways to donate. Girl Scouts will be dropping off April Showers bags at houses in our community on April 20-22 and picking them up on April 28. If you get a bag, simply fill it with the items, and girls will pick it up and take it to the collection site. This year, you can also come to our new event, Showering the Communtiy. On April 21, Girl Scouts will be outside all Wal-Mart stores in our region handing out giant raindrops that list the items needed. You can pick up some of the items while you shop and drop them off at the barrels outside the stores. You can also purchase and donate pre-packaged bags at Schnucks and Dierbergs stores from April 21-28. If you forget to donate during the week of the event, don't worry. Dierbergs Markets will have donation barrels through May 6, so there will still be an opportunity to help. We'd like to give a huge thanks in advance to everyone who donates to this great cause. I know the people who receive the items will be extremely grateful. Best Wishes,
Donna K. Martin CEO, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri

Annie Malone May Day Parade
Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri has its very own 100th Anniversary float, which made its debut at the St. Louis Christmas Parade on Thanksgiving Day and was also featured in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Now we have a new opportunity for your troop to be part of a parade. The Annie Malone May Day Parade will be on Sunday, May 20, in downtown St. Louis.
Girl Scout troops are needed to walk behind the GSEM float. We would like participants to wear a Girl Scout green T-shirt if possible. A Girl Scout sash or vest can be worn over the T-shirt. Troops need to follow adult/girl ratios to participate in this fun activity. Space will be limited, so register early by completing this survey. |
Be a part of the celebration
Let us know what your troop is doing to celebrate this momentous centennial year whether it is on March 12 or throughout the year. We would love to share some of the great ideas with other leaders so they can also celebrate. We want this year to be one of celebrating our legacy and the future of Girl Scouting. Email your celebratory stories/events to jweir@girlscoutsem.org. We will feature some of the unique and exciting ideas in the BUZZ for other leaders as well. Naturally we will give your troop credit for the idea so include your Troop number, level and a contact number when you email us your event details. |

The BIG Day Parade
Sept. 22, 2012
As part of our BIG Day, we're having our own parade. This is our opportunity to tell the Girl Scout story to our community through a parade and afternoon activities.
Make sure your Neighborhood is featured in the parade and assist in telling our story. We want to show our community the unity we have as an organization to celebrate our landmark 100th Anniversary and demonstrate what we give to our community.
In order to feature both Neighborhoods and troops, we wil have a flag brigade. We want to ensure that all of our members participate in The BIG Day first and foremost since it will be a wonderful family day. We want 20,000 Girl Scout members and their families downtown in green shirts. It will be a great way for the entire family to celebrate our anniversary.
We also want our troops and Neighborhoods to celebrate in their own way as part of our grass roots approach to the celebration. The flag brigade is a part of that initiative. Here's how you can get involved:
- Your Neighborhood can participate by purchasing a 100th Anniversary flag at the shop at a discounted price
- Each troop that holds their own 100th Anniversary celebration can then make a streamer to hang on the flag with their troop number and name of the celebration on the streamer, which will be attached to the flag
- Your Neighborhood will then designate two representatives (you might consider holding a contest to select people or you can choose them) to carry your flag in the flag brigade in the parade to represent your Neighborhood
- This unit will be prominently featured in our parade
- You can maintain these flags and proudly display them at future Neighborhood meetings
This is a fun and rewarding way to encourage troops to plan their own centennial year celebration. We hope to see many flags and streamers being carried down Market Street.
For planning purposes, please email Mary Ann Owens, mowens@girlscoutsem.org, and confirm that your Neighborhood will be participating in this exciting initiative. |

Centennial Patch Program
Promise for the Future: 100 Years of Leadership
Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri invites Girl Scouts of all ages to earn a special centennial patch to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting. The 100th Anniversary celebrates Girl Scouting, giving girls the opportunity to build leadership skills and help others, teaching girls about the outdoors and allowing girls to learn new skills while still having fun.
This patch will be available to purchase in the Girl Scout Shop through March 12, 2013. That gives girls the remainder of this school year and into next to earn this special patch.
A copy of the Centennial Patch Program booklet, which was sent to Troop Leaders, is available in the Resource Centers and can be found on our website. In addition, troops or individuals may decide to check out the 100th Anniversary district trunk by contacting their 100th Anniversary District Trunk Managers or GSEM Resource Centers. These trunks will be available to check out during the centennial year and contain items such as the GSEM Floor Puzzle, the Girl Scout Timeline, a flip camera and more that will assist girls in completing the Patch Program.
Throughout the 100th Anniversary year, GSEM will showcase a variety of fun, interesting activity choices to help girls earn this special patch. Below is an example of one of the Centennial Patch Program activities that girls may choose to do. We hope you and your girls enjoy learning more about Girl Scouting and find the Centennial Patch Program tips helpful.
Take Action: Activity 4 - Green Your Community
On April 22, 2012, people around the world will celebrate Earth Day 2012. Girl Scouts of all ages can help their communities by planning and implementing an environmental service project in celebration of Earth Day 2012. Their activities can be geared for people of all ages that focus on energy or water conservation and education for clean air, water or land.
Try this activity to help girls with their observation skills and to explore the concept of protecting the environment:
Un-Nature Hike: This can be done on a trail through the woods but could be conducted in your backyard of trees or bushes. Set the trail up before your girls come out to take the hike. Pick a section of a trail and place a doxen or so man-made items in trees or bushes along the trail or on the ground beside the trail. Note: Keep track of where you put them for retrieval purposes. Use some bright objects that can be easily seen as well as brown or green objects that will be camouflage. Place litter such as napkins, water bottles, food wrappers, etc under leaves and sticks, leaving a small section uncovered. You may find items as you are laying out the trail that can be included. Before the girls take their hike, give them paper and pencils and instruct them to make a note of the litter they see along their walk. After they have all finished, review the number of items they found. If no one found them all, you may challenge them to hike the trail again. Finally, lead them through the trail, picking up the items as you pass them. Discuss the concept of litter and its environmental effects.
For more greening your community ideas, visit www.girlscouts.org/who_we_are/global/environmental/
Did you know?
In the fall of 1970, Girl Scouts of the USA launched a nationwide environmental action, Eco-Action. Girl Scouts of all ages, in troops and in camp groups, were encouraged to participate in activities focused on building awareness of the environmental dependences on everything and to take action to improve and protect the environment.

Become A Member of Girl Congress and Let Your Voice Be Heard
GSEM is currently accepting applications for Girl Congress Delegates. Girl Congress is an opportunity for experienced Girl Scouts to make Girl Scouting better for all girls and be a representative for our Council. Girls have the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, plan fun events and have access to opportunities that can make her own Girl Scout experience even better. This past year, some Girl Congress members have participated in a television fashion show, conducted interviews with various media outlets, represented GSEM at a Cardinals game and planned several great events for girls. Two Girl Congress members have received college scholarships this year totaling over $5,000.
Girl Congress members are elected by their District and can serve a one year term, and then can be re-elected for another term. Each District is allowed to elect two Delegates and two Alternates. The term is June 1-May 31 each year. To be elected as a Girl Congress Delegate, the applicant must be a girl member of GSEM, 14 years old by the start of the term and submit the Individual Program Application. She should also include a short biography, which has information about her Girl Scout involvement, community activities and reasons why she wants to become a member of Girl Congress. A District Chair may also fill out the necessary paperwork and nominate a girl member.
It is expected that the Girl Congress Delegates attend all meetings. Meetings are usually held the third Tuesday of each month during the school year. Please submit all nomination forms and biographies to Marti Kelly, 314.592.2358, mkelly@girlscoutsem.org. |

Have You Saved a Life Today?
Each year, the American Red Cross teaches lifesaving skills to over 700 GSEM volunteers. Creating a safe environment for nearly 58,000 girls annually is only possible through the help of people like you.
We need volunteers to take the American Red Cross Instructor training as soon as possible to ensure that there are enough trainers to certify our Leaders as Level I or Level II First Aiders. Help make a difference in people's lives by teaching First Aid and CPR/AED to Girl Scout Leaders.

Training for New Leaders
"I wish I'd taken this course three months ago!" GSEM trainers often hear this from participants in the Leader Prep courses. These courses provide the information new leaders need to have a successful year, and leaders who don't take them find themselves learning the same things the "hard way," often through frustrating trial and error. The courses are required for new leaders, but often busy leaders put off taking them - only to wish they hadn't.
Reality Check:
Have you set up a troop checking account?
Do you know that you must submit an Annual Troop Treasury Report by May 31?
Do you really understand what the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is and how you can help girls benefit from it?
Do you know how to make a Girl Scout Journey a fun and exciting adventure for the girls in your troop?
Do you know about Safety Activity Checkpoints and Volunteer Essentials (essential resources for every leader)?
Is it worth two hours of your time to make sure girls are safe?
Do you know how to partner with parents so they can share responsibility for the troop?
These three courses can help:
- Girl Scouting 101
- Introduction to Girl Scouting
- Journey Immersion Workshop
Bonus: There is a $5 gift certificate for the Girl Scout Shop on the lower portion of the Introduction to Girl Scouting completion letter. Think about how handy that will come in for your end-of-year purchases.

New Link! Attention All Parents of Girl Scout Daisies and Daisy Troop Leaders
Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) is embarking on a long-term research project designed to measure the outcomes of Girl Scouting for girls over several years. We are inviting parents to enroll their Girl Scout Daisies in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Leaders of Daisy troops are asked to provide the following information to the parents of girls in their troops. Dear Parent/Guardian, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri and Girl Scouts of the USA invite your daughter to be a Girl Scout Voice and to share her experiences about Girl Scouting through a brand new research project. GSEM is embarking on a long-term study of the benefits of Girl Scouting, and we'd like to have your daughter participate. The purpose of this project is to understand what your daughter is doing and learning through Girl Scouts and to identify how she benefits over the long term. By completing these online surveys, your daughter will help us tell the story of the Girl Scout experience for all girls.
- Please note that your daughter's information on these surveys is secure and confidential. Your daughter will not receive any sales or marketing contact as a result of her participation, and Council staff and volunteers will not be able to see her individual responses to questions. We will see the information compiled across all girls who take the surveys. Information on the Girl Scout data use policy may be found at www.girlscouts.org/research/data_use_policy.asp
- There will be incentives for Girl Scoust as they complete the surveys. Once your daughter is registered, she will receive invitations to participate in online surveys later this spring as well as in future years. She may accept or refuse to participate in these surveys as she wishes. We're counting on girls like your daughter to help make Girl Scouts a BETTER PLACE FOR ALL GIRLS! If you have questions about this project, please contact Kathy White, Director, Research and Evaluation, 314.592.2389, kwhite@girlscoutsem.org.
