FROM OUR CEO
Greetings!

Donna Martin

Everyone has heard the saying "April showers bring May flowers." Well, it's almost time for April Showers, and at Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, our April Showers bring much needed personal care items to people in need in our community. This year, girls will deliver bags on April 20, 21 and 22 and pick them up on April 28. I hope you find it in your heart to fill the bags with shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, deodorant, diapers/baby care, feminine hygiene products and first aid supplies. Think about the mom who can't afford diapers for her new baby. Think about the child who goes to school and is bullied because they can't afford soap and don't have proper hygiene. This is your chance to make a big difference in the lives of so many people.

This year, you can also help with an exciting new event called Showering the Community. On April 21, you'll see Girl Scouts outside every Wal-Mart store in our Council, from Kirksville to St. Genevieve, handing out giant raindrops with a printed list of all the items we're collecting. It's an easy way for you to go into Wal-Mart, pick up some of the items and drop them off on your way out. Be sure you're a part of setting a Guinness World Record by raising over 1.2 million items. With your help and generosity, we can do it together.

Thanks to you, the first few months of our 100th Anniversary year have been a huge success. Not only are we celebrating the Girl Scouts' centennial, but we are also celebrating all of you for your hard work that will keep Girl Scouts going for the next 100 years.

Best Wishes,

Donna K. Martin
CEO, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri
CENTENNIAL UPDATE
Be a part of the celebration

Let us know what your troop is doing to celebrate this momentous centennial year whether it is on March 12 or throughout the year. We would love to share some of the great ideas with other leaders so they can also celebrate. We want this year to be one of celebrating our legacy and the future of Girl Scouting. Email your celebratory stories/events to jweir@girlscoutsem.org. We will feature some of the unique and exciting ideas in the BUZZ for other leaders as well.  Naturally we will give your troop credit for the idea so include your Troop number, level and a contact number when you email us your event details.
A Mother's Day Gift as Unique as Your Mom

Celebrate your mom this Mother's Day with a gift that will last a lifetime. Recognize her by donating $100 to Family Partnership, and you will receive a personalized paving brick, which will be installed at the camp of your choice in 2013 in her honor. To recognize the families who support the Girl Scout mission in 2012 with a gift of $100 or more, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is promoting the value of philanthropy and honoring your generosity with a Legacy Brick. Each brick is 4x8 inches and may have up to three lines of text.

Keepsake replica baby bricks can also be purchased for $20.

To make your gift to Family Partnership, visit our website, call Fund Development at 314.592.2320, or mail your gift to:

Thank you for leaving a legacy by investing in girls.
The BIG Day - Believe in Girls

Big DaySept. 22, 2012

Join us as we paint downtown St. Louis green - green trefoils in the streets, green water in the fountains and green lights in the trees.

The day begins with a parade and will culminate with our very own flash mob and FamFest at Soldiers Memorial Park. Come enjoy great stage entertainment, activity booths and service projects throughout the day. A celebrity concert tops off The BIG Day, making this the event you won't want to miss. While Girl Scouts are creating this day of green, the entire community is invited to join the fun.

Visit our website to find out more about becoming a VIP for The BIG Day and even more details about the event. Also, find out about volunteering and transportation. Join us for a great day!

The BIG Day Parade

ParadeSept. 22, 2012

As part of our BIG Day, we're having our own parade. This is our opportunity to tell the Girl Scout story to our community through a parade and afternoon activities.

Make sure your Neighborhood is featured in the parade and assist in telling our story. We want to show our community the unity we have as an organization to celebrate our landmark 100th Anniversary and demonstrate what we give to our community.

In order to feature both Neighborhoods and troops, we wil have a flag brigade. We want to ensure that all of our members participate in The BIG Day first and foremost since it will be a wonderful family day. We want 20,000 Girl Scout members and their families downtown in green shirts. It will be a great way for the entire family to celebrate our anniversary.

We also want our troops and Neighborhoods to celebrate in their own way as part of our grass roots approach to the celebration. The flag brigade is a part of that initiative. Here's how you can get involved:

- Your Neighborhood can participate by purchasing a 100th Anniversary flag at the shop at a discounted price

- Each troop that holds their own 100th Anniversary celebration can then make a streamer to hang on the flag with their troop number and name of the celebration on the streamer, which will be attached to the flag

- Your Neighborhood will then designate two representatives (you might consider holding a contest to select people or you can choose them) to carry your flag in the flag brigade in the parade to represent your Neighborhood

- This unit will be prominently featured in our parade

- You can maintain these flags and proudly display them at future Neighborhood meetings

This is a fun and rewarding way to encourage troops to plan their own centennial year celebration. We hope to see many flags and streamers being carried down Market Street.

For planning purposes, please email Mary Ann Owens, mowens@girlscoutsem.org, and confirm that your Neighborhood will be participating in this exciting initiative.

April Showers

April 21, 2012
Mark your calendar - On April 21, bag distribution Saturday, GSEM will try to set the Guinness World Records by collecting more than 1 million personal care items. Before or after your troop delivers their assigned bags, you will come to a Wal-Mart store in your area to encourage donations and collect items. Troops of girls dressed in raincoats and rain boots and carrying umbrellas will be distributing April Showers bags and raindrops listing the personal care items needed to customers entering the store. April Showers barrels will be located inside and outside the store. All of the items collected April 21-28 will be counted and added together to achieve our world record. Let's try to collect even more items this year and set the record!

There will be many surprises that day, so don't miss out on the fun. Complete the troop interest survey to participate.

Watch for updates in BUZZ Neighborhood Announcements and Council News, our website and information through your Neighborhood April Showers Coordinators.

Centennial Patch Program

Promise for the Future: 100 Years of Leadership

The Centennial Patch Program is designed to help girls learn by doing and to connect with others while they celebrate Girl Scouting's past and present and plan for the future. Leaders/advisors or parents should help guide girls to choose activities that allow them to succeed. To earn the patch, girls must complete a total of five activities. Girls should choose one activity from each of the Discover, Connect and Take Action categories, and then complete two more activities from any category. Activities can be completed individually or in a troop, in any order.

Throughout the 100th Anniversary year, GSEM will showcase a variety of fun, interesting activity choices to help girls earn this special patch. Below is an example of one of the Centennial Patch Program activities that girls may choose to do. We hope you and your girls enjoy learning more about Girl Scouting and find the Centennial Patch Program tips helpful.

Discover: Explore the Great Outdoors

"Girl Scout likes to hike and camp. She learns to know the stars, and becomes

acquainted with the plants and animals about her. She gains independence from her ability to help herself, and health and strength from exercise in the sunshine and fresh air."

Source: Official Handbook of the Girl Scouts (page 313), 1920

Today, camping is still a great way to build new skills, try new adventures and develop a deep appreciation for nature. Learning skills that are helpful in the outdoors can provide experiences for girls to help them in their everyday. Girls can learn about appropriate fashion for the weather, knots, lashing, backpacking, security and safety, finding their way and orienteering for older girls.

Activities and possibilities are endless!

1. Bring star maps and binoculars or a small telescope to view the star-filled night sky away from the lights of the city. The view is amazing, especially for urban and suburban girls.

2. Give each girl a disposable camera and take a walk around nature with them. Make sure they take pictures of each other and their leaders. Some of your favorite shots can be used as a scrapbooking activity.

3. Provide the girls wtih guides to plants, birds and/or bugs they might find on their hikes or backpacking trip. It is fun to figure out what it is you are finding, or you can choose to go hunting for what is in the book.

4. Are you near water? See if the girls want to go fishing or see if there are canoe or kayak rentals near, a great activity for older girls. Remember to ensure the safety of the girls and adults by verifying that all Safety Activity guidelines are my by reviewing the Safety Activity Checkpoints.

Become A Member of Girl Congress and Let Your Voice Be Heard

GSEM is currently accepting applications for Girl Congress Delegates. Girl Congress is an opportunity for experienced Girl Scouts to make Girl Scouting better for all girls and be a representative for our Council. Girls have the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, plan fun events and have access to opportunities that can make her own Girl Scout experience even better. This past year, some Girl Congress members have participated in a television fashion show, conducted interviews with various media outlets, represented GSEM at a Cardinals game and planned several great events for girls. Two Girl Congress members have received college scholarships this year totaling over $5,000.

Girl Congress members are elected by their District and can serve a one year term, and then can be re-elected for another term. Each District is allowed to elect two Delegates and two Alternates. The term is June 1-May 31 each year. To be elected as a Girl Congress Delegate, the applicant must be a girl member of GSEM, 14 years old by the start of the term and submit the Individual Program Application. She should also include a short biography, which has information about her Girl Scout involvement, community activities and reasons why she wants to become a member of Girl Congress. A District Chair may also fill out the necessary paperwork and nominate a girl member.

It is expected that the Girl Congress Delegates attend all meetings. Meetings are usually held the third Tuesday of each month during the school year. Please submit all nomination forms and biographies to Marti Kelly, 314.592.2358, mkelly@girlscoutsem.org.

Grades 8-11

Word Up...It's All About U!

Project U Leadership Series kicks off in June and you're invited.

Project U isn't your typical Girl Scout program or camp. No s'mores, campfires or tents. It kicks off with a four-day college campus overnight followed by additional workshops in the fall and winter. We're talking goals, leadership, teambuilding, mentorship, good food, dorm life, swimming and tons of fun. Sign up and look out...your future is bright.

Details will be mailed to girls and leaders in April.

Grades 10-11

Youth Leadership St. Louis

Deadline: April 15

Submit: Individual Program Application

Youth Leadership St. Louis is a program for girls who will be juniors or seniors in high school next year and would like the opportunity to develop leadership skills. The program is facilitated by FOCUS St. Louis.

FOCUS St. Louis has offered a high school youth leadership program for more than 20 years, and Girl Scouts have been a part of it for nearly as long. This program brings together and connects students from high schools all around the metro St. Louis area with one another and with others in the community. They discover information about St. Louis' political, economic, criminal justice, diversity and social service systems and learn how they can take action to make St. Louis even better.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri will have a student team for this program once again. Girls in grades 10-11 must commit to attending an overnight retreat in September and the workshops, which take place one weekday and one Saturday from October-April (excluding December). Workshops take place at various sites and agencies around the area including St. Louis City Hall. Girls must have their own transportation to workshops. Interviews will be conducted in May.

ADULT DEVELOPMENT

Have You Saved a Life Today?

Each year, the American Red Cross teaches lifesaving skills to over 700 GSEM volunteers. Creating a safe environment for nearly 58,000 girls annually is only possible through the help of people like you.

We need volunteers to take the American Red Cross Instructor training as soon as possible to ensure that there are enough trainers to certify our Leaders as Level I or Level II First Aiders. Help make a difference in people's lives by teaching First Aid and CPR/AED to Girl Scout Leaders.

Click here for more information and dates the training will take place.

For registration information, contact Zakiyyah Kitab, 314.592.2329, zkitab@girlscoutsem.org.

Training for New Leaders

"I wish I'd taken this course three months ago!" GSEM trainers often hear this from participants in the Leader Prep courses. These courses provide the information new leaders need to have a successful year, and leaders who don't take them find themselves learning the same things the "hard way," often through frustrating trial and error. The courses are required for new leaders, but often busy leaders put off taking them - only to wish they hadn't.

Reality Check:
Have you set up a troop checking account?
Do you know that you must submit an Annual Troop Treasury Report by May 31?
Do you really understand what the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is and how you can help girls benefit from it?
Do you know how to make a Girl Scout Journey a fun and exciting adventure for the girls in your troop?
Do you know about Safety Activity Checkpoints and Volunteer Essentials (essential resources for every leader)?
Is it worth two hours of your time to make sure girls are safe?
Do you know how to partner with parents so they can share responsibility for the troop?

These three courses can help:
- Girl Scouting 101
- Introduction to Girl Scouting
- Journey Immersion Workshop

Bonus: There is a $5 gift certificate for the Girl Scout Shop on the lower portion of the Introduction to Girl Scouting completion letter. Think about how handy that will come in for your end-of-year purchases.

Find more information about these courses and how to take them.

Help Us Serve Girls by Completing a Survey

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri's goal is to provide girls with programs that will teach them more about the fun in Girl Scouting and the opportunity to learn valuable life skills to become the leaders of tomorrow. Please help us with our commitment to help girls develop leadership skills, connect with others, strengthen their values and make the world a better place by completing this survey. You will not be identified and your responses will not be linked to your name or troop number.

If you have questions about the survey, please contact Kathy White, Director, Research and Evaluation, 314.592.2389, kwhite@girlscoutsem.org. Please respond by April 13, 2012.

New Link! Attention All Parents of Girl Scout Daisies and Daisy Troop Leaders

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) is embarking on a long-term research project designed to measure the outcomes of Girl Scouting for girls over several years.

We are inviting parents to enroll their Girl Scout Daisies in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Leaders of Daisy troops are asked to provide the following information to the parents of girls in their troops.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri and Girl Scouts of the USA invite your daughter to be a Girl Scout Voice and to share her experiences about Girl Scouting through a brand new research project. GSEM is embarking on a long-term study of the benefits of Girl Scouting, and we'd like to have your daughter participate.

The purpose of this project is to understand what your daughter is doing and learning through Girl Scouts and to identify how she benefits over the long term. By completing these online surveys, your daughter will help us tell the story of the Girl Scout experience for all girls.

Please register your Girl Scout to have her voice heard at www.girlscoutvoices.org.

- Please note that your daughter's information on these surveys is secure and confidential. Your daughter will not receive any sales or marketing contact as a result of her participation, and Council staff and volunteers will not be able to see her individual responses to questions. We will see the information compiled across all girls who take the surveys. Information on the Girl Scout data use policy may be found at www.girlscouts.org/research/data_use_policy.asp

- There will be incentives for Girl Scoust as they complete the surveys.

Once your daughter is registered, she will receive invitations to participate in online surveys later this spring as well as in future years. She may accept or refuse to participate in these surveys as she wishes.

We're counting on girls like your daughter to help make Girl Scouts a BETTER PLACE FOR ALL GIRLS!

If you have questions about this project, please contact Kathy White, Director, Research and Evaluation, 314.592.2389, kwhite@girlscoutsem.org.
