FROM OUR CEO
Greetings!

Donna Martin

You may have noticed some changes in our last e-blast. We recently began using a different system to put the newsletter together, so it has a great new look. It's also easier to find articles that interest you. The table of contents located on the left side of the e-blast will take you directly to a certain article. We hope you find the new and improved e-blast as informative as ever and easy to navigate.

Tomorrow night, our new signature fundraiser, Dessert First, will bring together hundreds of people who support Girl Scouting. It is sure to be a wonderful evening for all, and guests will finally have the chance to live out a childhood dream - eating dessert before dinner!

If you haven't ordered Girl Scout Cookies yet, don't worry. It's almost time for cookie booths. Girls will be out selling cookies in front of local businesses and supermarkets starting February 29. It's a great chance to stock up on all of your favorites. Visit our website to find a cookie booth near you.

Best Wishes,

Donna K. Martin

GENERAL NEWS
Help Celebrate the 100th Birthday of Girl Scouts on March 12, 2012

100th Birthday

To celebrate the 100th birthday of Girl Scouting on March 12, 2012, we are encouraging all girl and adult members of our organization and all others who support Girl Scouts and our mission to wear Girl Scout clothing to work, school or just out in their community.

It would be wonderful to see more than 50,000 people either in their Girl Scout uniform or a green Girl Scout shirt on our birthday. What an impact this would make in our communities. We suggest that girl members wear their uniforms or a green T-shirt to school. Adults, please wear Girl Scout green or a Girl Scout shirt to work or while you're out. Let's all celebrate this momentous birthday as a Girl Scout organization and send our message of building tomorrow's leaders community-wide.

If your school or place of work will allow, also think about decorating your locker, door, cube or desk. Let's start some buzz about Girl Scouting. We understand the value of discover, connect and take action, and we know that our Council gives 1 million hours of service annually valued at more than $19 million. Help us bring this message in mass to everyone in our community by showing support on March 12.

Troop Leaders can carry this celebratory day a step further by having their own birthday party with your troop.

We would love to see pictures of you, your daughter, your troop or your friends celebrating in their Girl Scout apparel. Please email your pictures to sconnors@girlscoutsem.org. You just might see yourself on our website or in a publication.

To aid your efforts to wear green, all green T-shirts will be discounted 20% in our St. Louis Girl Scout Shop on February 11. You do not want to miss this day as you will also be able to purchase your Birthday Bash T-shirt and your original GSEM 100th Anniversary signed poster. The shop will be open from 10 am-2 pm with fun activities and great discounts. You will also have the chance to meet the artist who designed our poster and who is also a former Troop Leader.

Be a part of the celebration

Let us know what your troop is doing to celebrate this momentous centennial year whether it is on March 12th or throughout the year. We would love to share some of the great ideas with other leaders so they can also celebrate. We want this year to be one of celebrating our legacy and the future of Girl Scouting. Email your celebratory stories/events to jweir@girlscoutsem.org. We will feature some of the unique and exciting ideas in the BUZZ for other leaders as well.  Naturally we will give your troop credit for the idea so include your Troop number, level and a contact number when you email us your event details.
Do you love a parade?

Parade

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri has its very own 100th Anniversary float, which made its debut at the St. Louis Christmas Parade on Thanksgiving Day. The float will also be featured in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in downtown St. Louis on March 17, 2012, at noon.

Girl Scout troops are needed to participate in this parade to walk behind the GSEM float. We would like participants to wear a Girl Scout green T-shirt if possible. A Girl Scout sash or vest can be worn over the T-shirt. Troops need to follow adult/girl ratios to participate in this fun activity. Space will be limited, so register early.

Centennial Patch Program

Promise for the Future: 100 Years of Leadership

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is offering a special Promise for the Future: 100 years of Leadership Centennial Patch Program. A copy of the Centennial Patch Program booklet was mailed to registered Troop Leaders, Lifetime Members, PEGS, District Chairs, Neighborhood Team Chairs and various groups of adult volunteers. It is also available in the Resource Center and can be found on our website.

The Centennial Patch Program is a journey for girls to take different paths toward earning the commemorative patch. Leaders/advisors or parents should help guide girls to choose activities that allow them to be successful. To earn the patch, girls must complete a total of five activities. Girls should choose one activity from each Discover, Connect and Take Action categories and then complete two more activities from any category. Activities can be completed individually or in a troop, in any order.

Throughout the 100th Anniversary year, GSEM will showcase a variety of fun, interesting activity choices to help girls earn this special patch. Below is an example of one of the Centennial Patch Program activities that girls may choose to do. We hope you and your girls enjoy learning more about Girl Scouting and find the Centennial Patch Program tips helpful.

Girls are asked to explore the history of Girl Scouting in Activity 6: "Dig for Your Girl Scout Roots." Steps include reading a book about Juliette Gordon Low. Although there are many books to choose from, Juliette Gordon Low: Founder of the Girl Scouts of America or Lady from Savannah are very informative books about Daisy's life and family. For girls/troops with access to the Internet, more information about Juliette Gordon Low and her family can be found here.

Girls may also decide to have a movie night with popcorn and candy while they watch the 1920s era black and white movie, The Golden Eaglet, which can be found in the 100th Anniversary District Trunk, on GSUSA's blog or from GSEM's Resource Centers. Girls can drift back into another era while exploring the life of a Girl Scout through hands-on activities and props from 1912, the 1940s, the 1960s or the 1970s, which are provided in the trunks. These traveling trunks are available from the Emerson Resource Center.

Did you know?

On October 28, 1979, Juliette Gordon Low was installed into the Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York.

Attention All Parents of Girl Scout Daisies and Daisy Troop Leaders

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) is embarking on a long-term research project designed to measure the outcomes of Girl Scouting for girls over several years.

We are inviting parents to enroll their Girl Scout Daisies in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Leaders of Daisy troops are asked to provide the following information to the parents of girls in their troops.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri and Girl Scouts of the USA invite your daughter to be a Girl Scout Voice and to share her experiences about Girl Scouting through a brand new research project. GSEM is embarking on a long-term study of the benefits of Girl Scouting, and we'd like to have your daughter participate.

The purpose of this project is to understand what your daughter is doing and learning through Girl Scouts and to identify how she benefits over the long term. By completing these online surveys, your daughter will help us tell the story of the Girl Scout experience for all girls.

Please register your Girl Scout to have her voice heard at www.girlscoutvoices.org.

- Please note that your daughter's information on these surveys is secure and confidential. Your daughter will not receive any sales or marketing contact as a result of her participation, and Council staff and volunteers will not be able to see her individual responses to questions. We will see the information compiled across all girls who take the surveys. Information on the Girl Scout data use policy may be found at www.girlscouts.org/research/data_use_policy.asp

- There will be incentives for Girl Scoust as they complete the surveys.

Once your daughter is registered, she will receive invitations to participate in online surveys later this spring as well as in future years. She may accept or refuse to participate in these surveys as she wishes.

We're counting on girls like your daughter to help make Girl Scouts a BETTER PLACE FOR ALL GIRLS!

If you have questions about this project, please contact Kathy White, Director, Research and Evaluation, 314.592.2389, kwhite@girlscoutsem.org.
