Help Celebrate the 100th Birthday of Girl Scouts on March 12, 2012
To celebrate the 100th birthday of Girl Scouting on March 12, 2012, we are encouraging all girl and adult members of our organization and all others who support Girl Scouts and our mission to wear Girl Scout clothing to work, school or just out in their community.
It would be wonderful to see more than 50,000 people either in their Girl Scout uniform or a green Girl Scout shirt on our birthday. What an impact this would make in our communities. We suggest that girl members wear their uniforms or a green T-shirt to school. Adults, please wear Girl Scout green or a Girl Scout shirt to work or while you're out. Let's all celebrate this momentous birthday as a Girl Scout organization and send our message of building tomorrow's leaders community-wide.
If your school or place of work will allow, also think about decorating your locker, door, cube or desk. Let's start some buzz about Girl Scouting. We understand the value of discover, connect and take action, and we know that our Council gives 1 million hours of service annually valued at more than $19 million. Help us bring this message in mass to everyone in our community by showing support on March 12.
Troop Leaders can carry this celebratory day a step further by having their own birthday party with your troop.
We would love to see pictures of you, your daughter, your troop or your friends celebrating in their Girl Scout apparel. Please email your pictures to sconnors@girlscoutsem.org. You just might see yourself on our website or in a publication.
To aid your efforts to wear green, all green T-shirts will be discounted 20% in our St. Louis Girl Scout Shop on February 11. You do not want to miss this day as you will also be able to purchase your Birthday Bash T-shirt and your original GSEM 100th Anniversary signed poster. The shop will be open from 10 am-2 pm with fun activities and great discounts. You will also have the chance to meet the artist who designed our poster and who is also a former Troop Leader. |
Be a part of the celebration
Let us know what your troop is doing to celebrate this momentous centennial year whether it is on March 12th or throughout the year. We would love to share some of the great ideas with other leaders so they can also celebrate. We want this year to be one of celebrating our legacy and the future of Girl Scouting. Email your celebratory stories/events to jweir@girlscoutsem.org. We will feature some of the unique and exciting ideas in the Buzz for other leaders as well. Naturally we will give your troop credit for the idea so include your Troop number, level and a contact number when you email us your event details. |
100,000 Bulbs for 100 Years
Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri invites Girl Scouts of all ages to help make our communities a better place by planting a flower-filled garden. Operation Brightside has made available to GSEM 100,000 flower bulbs, mostly Daffodils, with some Tulips and other flowers. Girl Scout troops/groups are welcome to take bulbs in their current packaging (either 100 bulb bags or 250 bulb bags). We ask that troops only take the number of bags they think they can reasonably plant. Bulbs are available while supplies last.
Bulbs can be planted in public locations with permission of land owner. Plant in areas such as schools, parks, community centers, retirement/nursing homes, churches and government offices. Bulbs should not be used for private use. The bulbs need to be planted by mid February to bloom this spring. If not planted by mid February, they will bloom next spring. Planting instructions will be provided with bulbs.
Troops/Individuals who plan to earn the Centennial Patch Program can choose to plant bulbs as one of the service components "Make the World a Better Place" requirement: Green Your Community. Also, don't forget to report the troop/group hours of service through Seasons of Giving.

Centennial Patch Program Promise for the Future: 100 Years of Leadership
We are excited to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouts in 2012. To commemorate this milestone year, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) is offering a special Promise for the Future, 100 Years of Leadership Centennial Patch Program. It's designed to help girls learn by doing and to discover their full potential. The patch program will help create awareness and understanding of the Girl Scout traditions of the past and present as we move forward into the future.
Through participation in a series of fun and interesting activities, girls may choose to practice how they use resources wisely by making clothes from recyclable items and share their creativity at a fashion show. They may also plant a Girl Scout Grove of trees or start a water conservation campaign. To showcase our long history in the community, girls may decide to create a video depicting their view of what Girl Scouting will look like in the next 100 years.
In addition, through both the Family Partnership and the Centennial Patch Program, Girl Scouts will learn about the value of philanthropy. To recognize the girls and their families who support the Girl Scout mission in 2012 with a gift of $100 or more, personalized paving bricks will be installed at council camps on walkways and patios in their honor. By investing in a 4"x8" brick, girls have the opportunity to receive their own personalized, keepsake "baby brick" for an additional donation of $20 each. For more information about Leave a Legacy Brick by Brick-Invest in Girls and the brick recognition opportunity, please see our website. For questions regarding Family Partnership contact Gail Weller, 314.592.2373, gweller@girlscoutsem.org. For questions regarding the Centennial Patch program, contact your Regional Program Manager below.
A copy of the Centennial Patch Program booklet was mailed to registered Troop Leaders and PEGS, District Chairs, Neighborhood Team Chairs and various groups of adult volunteers, it is also available in the Resource Centers, and found on the council web. If you receive a copy and decide not to keep it, please use resources wisely and pass it on to another Girl Scout volunteer.
In addition, troops or individuals may decide to check out a 100th Anniversary District Trunk. These trunks will be available to check out from their 100th Anniversary District Trunk Manager (listed in the patch booklet) during the centennial year and will contain resources to assist girls in completing the Centennial Patch Program. We hope you will join Girl Scouts from around the Council by participating in this special patch program especially designed for girls in eastern Missouri.
