Greetings! |
We hope that our families have made it safely through the winds and rains of Hurricane Irene. So many people lost power and suffered damage to their homes! By now we hope that the worst is over for those hit hardest.
AFC had an exciting summer! The season started with our fundraiser, A Sparkling Celebration, held at the Clubhouse at Gillette Ridge homes on July 9. It was a beautiful evening for celebrating our first year in existence as an official nonprofit organization. Thanks to everyone who attended, and especially those who bid on our exciting silent auction items. The funds raised allow us to continue planning programs for children living with ASD and their families. Special thanks to our sponsors, The Talcott Center, World Fuels, and DotCom Wines!

AFC also participated as the host charity on August 3 at Blue Back Square's "Tastes N Toasts" event in West Hartford. We appreciate everyone who visited our booth in front of Rizzuto's and participated in the evening's fun events at Blue Back's restaurants.
Please read below to learn about AFC's fun fall programming. We hope to see you there! |

Playing on the Spectrum is designed especially for children on the spectrum. It provides a fun, safe environment appropriate for their needs. Play and exercise is facilitated by professional clinicians, and will include both planned activities and free play. The older children will be exposed to basic basketball skills. Groups are divided for children ages 4 to 7, and the other is for children ages 8 to 12. Each group meets for 90 minutes with snack time included. Both programs are open to residents of all towns.

Swimming on the Spectrum
Swim safety is important to all children, and particularly to children with autism. Autism Families CONNECTicut and Star Hill Family Athletic Center announce Swimming on the Spectrum, a series of swim lessons targeted to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ages 5 to 12.
This is a chance for your child to learn swimming basics and become comfortable in the water!
Beginning Sunday, Sept. 25 and continuing for 5 weeks, children will receive basic swim instruction at the facility's Aquatics Center in Tolland. Classes will be taught by WSI-certified instructors and lifeguards in a warm, safe environment. Parents are asked to stay with their child but are not required to be in the water. Participants are not required to be members of Star Hill. A fee of $25 per child covers all five classes; classes are from 11:30 a.m. to noon. Children will be grouped according to ability level.
Register by visiting www.starhillsports.com. For more information please contact Marci at Star Hill Family Athletic Center, Tolland at 860-871-8800 or marci@starhillsports.com. |

Grant News | |
Autism Families CONNECTicut was honored to receive a grant from the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism this past February. The Foundation's Grant Committee reviewed hundreds of applications from New England and beyond, and AFC is proud to have been chosen as a recipient of funds for our 2011 programming.
Flutie Foundation funding has supported our Playing on the Spectrum gym program; our Songs on the Spectrum group music therapy sessions; and our Family Swim sessions. The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation was founded eleven years ago by Laurie and Doug Flutie in honor of their son Dougie, who has been living with autism since he was two. We appreciate the support of the Flutie Foundation! Check out their website here.
For the second year, AFC was also honored to receive a grant from the South Windsor Community Foundation Rays of Hope fund to support Songs on the Spectrum classes in South Windsor. We also received a donation from the South Windsor Junior Women's Club. Many thanks to the South Windsor community for their early and strong support of AFC! |

The Board Corner: "Peers and Social Interactions" by Christina Kiley, M.A.

If you are planning on having a play date for your child, here are a few things to think about. First consider choosing a target skill for your child. This can be something as simple as one of the following: 1) my child will stay with the peer for at least one activity, 2) my child will say hi to the peer, or 3) my child will demonstrate awareness and watch what the peer is doing, or 4) my child will make a request from his peer. If you are having a hard time deciding, consider calling your child's speech therapist or special education teacher. He or she will be able to help you narrow down a skill on which to focus.
Once you have a target skill, plan the play date. A visual aid can help your child know what to anticipate. The visual aid will tell the children what is going to happen. Use pictures or words to show them what they are going to do, like an activity schedule. If you do not already have pictures, you can go online and print pictures of the games or activities they will do. For instance, 1) ball, 2) outside, and 3) free time. You may also use words and write down what will happen on a dry erase board or piece of paper.
When scheduling, it is important to structure some activities but also give your child some free time. Free time will give your child an opportunity to feel relaxed. During the structured activity, work on your target skill. Again, the speech therapist or special education teacher can tell you how to teach your child the target skill.
Here are some ideas for games to play:
1. Candy Land - Cut out several 6"x 6" squares of construction paper that match the colors in Candy Land. On one side, put pictures or questions for your child to identify or answer. Next spread the color squares on the floor to make a path. Then use the cards from Candy Land and have your child choose one. After he chooses one, he has to go to that color square on the floor, flip the card, and identify the picture or answer a question. Have the children take turns.
2. Don't Break the Ice - Have the children help you set up Don't Break the Ice. Before each child takes a turn, have them pick up an index card with a picture to identify or a question to answer. They must complete the card before they get to break the ice.
3. Pop Up Pirates - Have the children request the color sword they want from each other.
4. Yahtzee - Draw 9 boxes on a piece of paper and put numbers in them. The numbers should be from 1-6 or 1-12. Next put 1 or 2 dice in the Yahtzee cup and have the children take turns rolling the dice. Once they roll the dice, have them add up the numbers. Next, they will use marker to mark off the numbers on the paper, similar to a Bingo board. For example, if your child rolls an eight, he will mark the eight off on his board. |
