What is wireless charging?
Wireless charging is charging by induction, without getting too technical, it us es an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects. This is usually done with induction coils, one in the charging station (power mat) and the other on the device being charged, say a phone.

Should I Offer my Guests a Charging Solution?
I believe you should. For now, offer them a wired solution. So many guests travel with devices that need charging, in fact 25% of guests travel with four or more devices that need charging.
We have all faced a frustrated guest that forgot their phone charger and there are a lot of solutions that are appropriate for the hotel environment.
There are two basic forms - iPod/iPhone/iPad Docking Clock Radio that charges as well as gives access to their iPod/iPhone/iPad or a Charging Station that can charge multiple devices from multiple manufacturers. In many situations, offering both is appropriate.
Key features to look for;
Does the device charge a lot of devices?
- Any charging station for a hotel should charge thousands of devices from multiple manufacturers.
Does the device have all attachments permanently attached?
- For a hotel environment we strongly recommend that you do NOT use a charging solution that has detachable pins, needs inserts to resize a dock etc.
- These will be lost over time making the unit ineffective for future guests and may decrease as opposed to improve customer satisfaction.
Does it look aesthetically pleasing and does it suit your decor?
- Some devices come in multiple finishes and even installation options - built in, stand alone.
Is it intuitive to use?
- Self explanatory, guests just want it to be easy and convenient - if it needs detailed instructions, we suggest you look at another alternative.
Can the charging solution charge more than one device at once?
- Maybe not always necessary but a nice to have feature and something to consider

What Does the Future Hold?
I think the future for convenient wireless charging is very bright. The current stumbling block is the need to add an induction coil to the phone or what ever needs charging.
Why not build it into the phone?
Great idea, shame I didn't think of it first!
Based on exciting research done by WiTricity Corporation (formed as a result of research at MIT) and patents submitted by Apple Inc I think we will see plenty of devices with built -in induction coils before too long.
WiTricity is even developing solutions for houses where your phone (with built in induction coil) will start charging when you walk in the door.
Rest asssured, we are watching this space closely and will keep you updated.
