Greetings!

This  November, California voters will have the opportunity to replace the death  penalty with life without possibility of parole by voting YES on Proposition  34, which stands for  "Savings, Accountability, and Full  Enforcement for California Act" (formerly SAFE California).  This proposition has had the support of the Bishops of California since its inception.  CCOP members are urged to actively support this proposition.  See SAFE CA.

The California bishops also support Proposition 35 (Californians Against Sexual Exploitation Act).

The Pleasanton City Council on August 21 approved recently drawn up Development Standards and Design Guidelines for nine rezoned sites for high density housing and affordable housing.  See Standards & Guidelines

Conflict Minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) welcome the long-awaited announcement of regulations that require companies to report whether they obtain any of four minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and what they do to track the source and chain of custody of those minerals.  These regulations are essential for protecting innocent civilians from violent militias funded by illicit mining operations.

Placing Work and Workers at the Center of Economic Life

September 3, 2012 - This Labor Day, our country continues to struggle with a broken economy that is not producing enough decent jobs. Millions of Americans suffer from unemployment, underemployment or are living in poverty as their basic needs too often go unmet. This represents a serious economic and moral failure for our nation. As people of faith, we are called to stand with those left behind, offer our solidarity, and join forces with "the least of these" to help meet their basic needs. We seek national economic renewal that places working people and their families at the center of economic life.

 What Work Is Really For

Is work good or bad? A fatuous question, it may seem, with unemployment such a pressing national concern... Even apart from current worries, the goodness of work is deep in our culture. We applaud people for their work ethic, judge our economy by its productivity and even honor work with a national holiday.

International Day of Peace 2012

"The International Day of Peace, marked every year on 21 September, gives us all a chance to reflect on the unconscionable toll - moral, physical, material - wrought by war. Those costs are borne not only by us today, but by future generations as well.
