Description: Over the past 25 years, HIV and AIDS has affected millions of people worldwide. When the AIDSRelief consortium, funded by the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), was launched in 2004 to stem the HIV pandemic with the latest drug therapy, many said it couldn't be done. AIDSRelief proved that HIV treatment is possible anywhere and our successful experience with PEPFAR illustrates how reductions in funding can undermine gains in combating of the disease. PEPFAR has directly supported life-saving antiretroviral treatment (ART) for more than 3.9 million men, women and children; provided 13 million people with care and support; and supported HIV counseling and testing for more than 40 million people.
CRS and our Catholic Church partners assist communities throughout the world to help people meet their basic health needs. HIV and AIDS is just one of many health challenges our brothers and sisters face. Malaria and Tuberculosis devastate the lives of families and young children at alarming rates. Thanks to the United States, part of the international assistance funding in the State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations helps communities fight back such horrible diseases. This small amount of funding, leveraged with the vast human resources the Catholic Church has around the world, helps millions of people who are poor and vulnerable live longer, healthier lives. As Congress debates the budget for fiscal year 2013, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and CRS will need your help to protect the funding for this critical life-saving work. As Catholics, we are compelled to act.
