Social Justice Newsletter

February 9, 2012

Greetings!

Greetings!

Beginning this month this Social Justice Newsletter will be published on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month through June and begin again in September. Each newsletter will tend to have shorter articles and fewer of them.

Readers are especially urged to act on the Action Alerts and to look carefully at the Brief Links.

You can learn a lot about the needs of the Bay Area and help the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Bay Area Association of Governments (ABAG) make plans concerning transportation and land use by participating in a "virtual workshop". It involves watching informative videos and answering survey questions. It must be done by February 15. http://www.onebayarea.org/workshops/virtual.htm

Please send your comments about anything related to this newsletter to socialjustice@catholicsofpleasanton.org.

Religious Education Congress 2012

The Los Angeles Religious Education Congress is the largest annual gathering of its kind in the world. The four-day event is held at the Anaheim (Calif.) Convention Center and is sponsored by the Office of Religious Education, a department of the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Attendance has grown steadily year after year and now reaches 40,000 including the Youth Day preceding the three day Congress for adults. This year's Congress offers over 200 speakers and over 300 workshops.

CCOP parishioners can order CD audio recordings of many of this year's workshops. The cost will be $9.60 (tax included) per CD.

A suggested way to select CDs:

  • Go to www.recongress.org
  • At the bottom of the first page, click on Workshops.
  • Click on Period 1. The workshops that will be recorded on CDs are indicated by a headphone symbol. Select the ones you wish to purchase by scanning and copying the session number and workshop title onto a blank Word document.
  • Repeat this process for Periods 2 through 8
  • If you have selected more than you can afford, remove some from your list
  • Order your CDs by sending your list of selections with your name and phone number in an email with the Subject "CD order" to socialjustice@catholicsofpleasanton.org

Two members of the Social Justice Committee will place a single order for all the CDs requested and will pick up all the CDs at the Religious Education Congress (avoiding shipping charges and getting a reduced rate).

Parishioners will pay by check payable to CCOP with note "RE Congress CDs". CDs can be picked up at the office in St. Elizabeth Seton after March 29.

Border conflict between Sudan and South Sudan

Urge President Obama to focus his Administration's efforts to work with both leaders in Sudan and South Sudan to:

1. Provide basic protection for civilians;

2. Allow humanitarian organizations and humanitarian aid to reach all populations in need; and

3. Monitor more closely the violence and displacement across the disputed border region between Sudan and South Sudan.

Press for two-state peace agreement in the Holy Land

Contact President Obama now and urge him to restart negotiations with Israeli and Palestinian leaders based on key principles and ideas addressed in other peace negotiations:

  • Creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza, based on the 1967 borders with possible limited land swaps as mutually agreed;
  • A fair negotiated resolution of the refugee issues that does not threaten the demography of Israel;
  • The sharing of Jerusalem by Israel and the Palestinian state as their capitals;
  • Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights as part of a peace agreement with Syria; and
  • Guarantees for free access to Jewish, Christian and Muslim holy places.

Ask President Obama to also coordinate with the other members of the "Quartet" (the United Nations, European Union, Russia) to respond carefully to the new Palestinian unity government and to not precipitously cut off aid that is essential for humanitarian needs and for building the capacity of a future Palestinian state. The United States should insist that the unity government commit to rejecting violence and negotiating a two-state peace agreement.

New HHS Contraception Mandate Undermines Religious Freedom

President Obama's new Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate will force Catholic organizations to violate their beliefs by forcing them to pay for contraception coverage. The mandate is an affront to religious freedom and undermines the efforts of compassionate, faithful people who provide services to everyone - regardless of their faith.

Reauthorization of Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act

Trafficking of people is a modern day scourge that afflicts millions of people, particularly women and children, around the world resulting in extreme forms of sexual exploitation and forced labor. The Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) established the United States' efforts and leadership to combat the multi-billion dollar industry. Since then, the U.S. government has worked to prevent trafficking in persons; prosecute those who profit from it; and protect victims. Catholic Relief Services partners with U.S. government agencies and others to prevent trafficking and protect victims in more than 35 countries around the world.

The Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act expired on September 30, 2011 and Congress must act to reauthorize it. If the bill does not pass, U.S. pressure on countries across the globe to combat modern-day slavery will suffer. In this precarious economic environment, more vulnerable and marginalized people may fall victim to those who would exploit them.

Help the Unemployed and Under-employed

Extend UI benefits and the payroll tax cut.

Congress must act before February 29 to extend Unemployment Insurance benefits and the payroll tax cut.

Tell your legislators that they must extend -- without any harmful provisions -- both the unemployment benefits and the reduction in payroll taxes through 2012. The continued high unemployment rate is draining our nation's resources. These economic boosts are critical.
