Notes from the Annual Americans for the Arts National Convention
 | "Cradle" on the Santa Monica Parking Garage by Ball-Nogues Studio, recognized in the Public Art Year in Review 2011 (47 projects selected out of 439 submissions) |
Sherri Brueggemann, Public Art Urban Enhancement Program Manager, attended the 2011 Americans for the Arts Annual Convention that was held in San Diego from June 16th to the 18th. She notes the theme for the Public Art track was "Infrastructure" and that some of the thoughts about public art that are circulating around the field nationally include: "The aesthetic value of a project is half the meaning."
Artists need more "media hydrants" - places where they can plug into "infrastructure data."
Thinking "In Situ: when bigger is better."
"New ideas need old buildings." (attributed to Jane Jacobs)
And finally, "Infrastructure is the new natural."
For a great example of the theme "In Situ: When bigger is better", check out the Portland Acupuncture Project .
