WasteCap NE Welcomes New Board Member
| | Kim Morrow HinrichsKim serves as Associate Minister at First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln, where she directs a Sustainable Living Ministry. This project seeks to raise consciousness among the congregation and wider community about environmental sustainability through guest speaker events, field trips, ecology & faith classes, worship, cooking classes and advocacy work. Prior to moving to Lincoln in 2010, Kim served on the staff of Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California for nine years, where she developed expertise in program management, fundraising, online theological education and working with a board of trustees. She holds a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz, a Master of Divinity from Pacific School of Religion, and has done doctoral studies at the Graduate Theological Union. She is passionate about helping people respond to the environmental urgencies of our time, and enjoys being mom to her two wonderful daughters. WasteCap News- Sustainable Business Awards Applications Due August 15th

WasteCap Nebraska is pleased to announce the call for nominations for its Sustainable Business Awards, to be presented during the luncheon at the Sustainability Summit on October 10th, 2012. In order to be eligible for an award, nominees must be a member of WasteCap Nebraska, but nominations may be made by any person or entity. Organizations may submit an awards application for their own company.

WasteCap News- 2012 Sustainability Summit Early Registration Discount and Vendor Information!
| | The 2012 Sustainability Summit is October 9th and 10th. The Summit workshop will be held in Lincoln, NE on Wednesday, October 10th at the University Nebraska East Campus. The Summit will be held in conjunction with WasteCap's 20th Anniversary Celebration Awards Luncheon also held at East Campus on Wednesday. A ticket to the Summit includes a ticket to the luncheon! The Summit will feature our keynote speaker, Auden Schendler, Vice President of Sustainability at Aspen Skiing Company. There are also break out sessions with wonderful speakers highlighting the topics of Energy, Tools and Resources for Sustainability Planning/Tracking, Zero Waste, Employee Engagement, Green Certification, and Green Marketing/Branding.

WasteCap News- Upcoming Green Team Roundtable in Lincoln for The Living Building Challenge

Archi+ETC and WasteCap Nebraska will host a presentation by Stuart Shell, AIA, LEED AP entitled, "An Introduction to The Living Building Challenge". The event will be held at Archi+ETC / Ayars & Ayars headquarters, 2436 N. 48th Street in Lincoln, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17th. Of special interest to architects, engineers and builders, the presentation is open to individuals interested in green building concepts as well. August 17 -
Lunch will be served and registration is required. Cost is $10 or $8 for WasteCap Nebraska members.

WasteCap News - Lincoln Bicycle Commuter Challenge

As of July 31, 2012, WasteCap staff have biked a total of 536 miles as part of Endomondo's National Bike Challenge. In July alone, 184 miles were logged by The Unwasted team: Chant� Bauer, Neil Tabor, and Julie Diegel. By biking instead of driving, we've saved a total of 490 pounds of CO2 so far and have saved $243 in fuel and vehicle wear since the beginning of the challenge in May 2012. The Unwasted team is holding steady at 58th place out of 99 registered teams in Lincoln.

WasteCap News- WasteCap Nebraska to Launch Sustainable Business Workshops and Certification Program | |
WasteCap Nebraska has been awarded a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality to develop a Sustainable Business Training and Certification pilot program in 2012-13. Funded for one year, this program will develop standards for a Nebraska Sustainable Business Certification, offer two half-day group workshops on sustainable business practices, and provide in-depth consultation to four businesses that want assistance in achieving Certification.

The reEnergize Program in Lincoln and Omaha is designed to build energy smart communities that use less energy and improve comfort, increase energy savings and improve air quality. Property must be within the city limits of Lincoln or Omaha and participants must be US citizens. Program participants will receive $100 off an energy evaluation by a qualified contractor, up to half the cost of energy upgrades, get the names of screened contractors to perform the upgrades and an inspection for quality at the end of the job. This two-day conference will feature tracks focused on compliance and advocacy, commercial building design, residential building design, and value and practical applications related to the 2009 and proposed 2012 energy codes. Sessions will be interactive and content will educate stakeholders on the "how to" of code adoption and enforcement as well as the importance of energy codes, how they impact states and local code jurisdictions - financially and structurally - so they can achieve compliance with the International Energy Conservation Codes.

News- OSHA issues two educational resources on protecting workers from mercury exposure in fluorescent bulbs

WASHINGTON - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued two new educational resources to help protect workers from mercury exposure while crushing and recycling fluorescent bulbs. Compact fluorescent bulbs are more efficient than incandescent bulbs, but the shift to energy-saving fluorescents, which contain mercury, calls for more attention to workers who handle, dispose of, and recycle used fluorescent bulbs.

Member News- SectorNow Receives Grant | |
SectorNow, parent company of CleanEarthApps, was awarded a $31,036 grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality's Waste Reduction & Recycling Incentive Grants Program. The grant will be used to enhance the WasteFinder Green App waste assessment system, with a Hazardous Materials module, a Hospitality Industry module, and make WasteFinder available on Apple iPad and iPhone devices. WasteCap Nebraska assisted SectorNow develop WasteFinder Green App, and will work with SectorNow during the App system enhancement program.
