August 2011

Greetings!

July went by fast for WasteCap Nebraska with meetings about our three-day Sustainability Summit, getting the WasteFinder App ready to go, and participating in a CFL swap here in Lincoln, we have been keeping busy! Here is an update on our programs, some information about our Sustainability Summit, new member biographies and some news about our members!

WasteCap News - WasteCap Nebraska Sustainable Business Summit

Bob Willard, a leading expert on quantifying and selling the business value of corporate sustainability strategies, will have practical advice, tools and resources to offer  participants at the 2011 WasteCap Nebraska Sustainability Summit, to be held October 12-14, with events in both Lincoln and Omaha.

Executive Director Carrie Hakenkamp says, "When we first contacted Bob for The Sustainable Business Awards Luncheon, we didn't realize we were headed towards planning our first three-day Summit. Bob is committed to sustainability; he wanted to make sure that his trip from Canada to Nebraska was going to generate measurable impact. So, in order to get the most out of his visit, we began sketching out a plan."

The itinerary is up on our website.

WasteCap News - WasteFinder Green App Arrives in September

As many of you know we are launching a new Waste Assessment App. Our WasteFinder Green App will
allow your business to track your waste right on your Android phone or tablet, enabline your company to have
true "Waste Management from Your Pocket."

WasteFinder has been specifically developed with the WasteCap Nebraska member company in mind. Many
of you participated in our survey we sent out last April when we first started to design a Waste Assessment app
based on our ten years of on-site experience in conducting Waste Assessment surveys. We truly value every
respondent's input and built your ideas and suggestions in the WasteFinder Green App "from the ground up."

WasteCap News - WasteCap Staff Participates in Lincoln Light Bulb Swap
On Saturday, July 16, WasteCap employee Chant Bauer participated in the Lincoln Light Bulb Swap.  The purpose of this event was to replace incandescent light bulbs with more energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs).  The Lincoln Energy Challenge, part of Cleaner Greener Lincoln, organized this event.  Federal stimulus dollars paid for the distributed CFLs, allowing participating apartment tenants to receive the CFLs at no cost.  A combination of citizen volunteers, landlords, city employees, and AmeriCorps volunteers braved the high temperatures and blazing sun to make this event happen.

WasteCap News - Climate Scientist James Hansen's Presentation at Creighton University

WasteCap staff received a delightful treat on Wednesday, August 3, 2011. Julie Diegel and Chant Bauer attended a presentation by climatologist James Hansen at Creighton University in Omaha. His talk was entitled "Halting Human-Made Climate Change: The Case for Young People and Nature". Even though this session was open to the public as part of the summer meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), it was poorly publicized. In fact, Julie and Chant made the decision to attend the talk on a last-minute whim after learning about it from coworker John Atkeison. It ended up being a great decision and an eye-opening experience.
