GiveBIG on May 2nd!

Rally your friends and family and support LIHI as part of the Seattle Foundation's GiveBIG on Wednesday May 2nd! GiveBIG is a one-day, online charitable giving event to inspire support of LIHI and other nonprofit organizations who make Seattle a healthier and more vital place to live. Why is GiveBIG so important? The Seattle Foundation will match a percentage of all GiveBIG contributions, so your dollars will stretch even further on May 2nd. Show your support for the good work that LIHI does in our community! Visit our Seattle Foundation profile page here for more information.

We Did It!!!

In the early hours of April 11th, the Washington State Legislature finally came to an agreement on the budget and ended the special session. Thank you to everyone who took the time to email and call their Senators and Representatives! Your advocacy saved multiple programs that were slated for elimination, and prevented new cuts to TANF and Disability Lifeline. The Housing Trust Fund was granted $67.1 million, and Housing and Essential Needs (HEN) was fully funded!

Thank you to Senator Ed Murray, Representative Hans Dunshee, House Speaker Frank Chopp, and all of our legislators for a job well done!

Visit the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance website here for up-to-date information.

NLIHC Conference In Washington D.C.

From left to right: Sonya Campion, Congressman Adam Smith, Rachael Myers, and Sharon Lee.

Sharon Lee, LIHI's Executive Director, attended the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) Housing Policy Conference in Washington D.C. at the end of March. The conference provided an opportunity for housing advocates to network and attend workshops. Sharon met with members of Congress and advocated for changes in the proposed 2013 Federal Budget. Housing advocates are pressing for more funding for the Transportation Housing and Urban Development (THUD) budget, HOME program, Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA), Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA), and Section 8 and Section 4 programs. For more information, visit the NLIHC website here.

Volunteer Spotlight

One of LIHI's most dedicated volunteers is embarking on a Peace Corps assignment this month. Mike Matthews has volunteered at LIHI in many capacities: entering data at the Urban Rest Stop, helping coordinate LIHI's annual Dessert Dash, connecting residents with local community resources, performing the One Night Count, and - to his greatest enjoyment - facilitating weekly resident writing sessions at the Frye Apartments.

Here's what Mike shared about volunteering with LIHI: "It is difficult to describe the wonderful affect volunteering with LIHI has had in my life. I began this journey at the Urban Rest Stop and was very impressed with this well organized, clean and comfortable facility, and the services it provides to the homeless. Co-facilitating the Writing Group at the Frye Apartment has enriched my own writing experience. I look forward to volunteering with LIHI once again after my return from the Peace Corps!"

Celebrate National Volunteer Week

Over the last twelve months more than 250 volunteers, including residents and Urban Rest Stop patrons, have donated their time, talents and skills to help LIHI end homelessness one person, one family, and one community at a time. Thank you!

Big thanks also to our community partners who help provide LIHI volunteer programming: Beal Bank, Cooking Matters, Garfield High School KEY Club, Home Depot, Path with Art, ProjectLine Services, The Seattle International District Rotary Club, St James ESL, Seattle Works, Seattle University, University of Washington School of Social Work, and 501 Commons.
